Ascot tips December 16

Ok Corral to do as expected

A snappy six-race card gets going from 2.00pm, and we waste no time whatsoever, giving our NAP of the afternoon in the curtain raiser, an eight-runner novices hurdle, disputed over two miles. Our traders have Ok Corral picked as the most likely winner, and we’re not in a rush to argue against them on that one.

Nicky Henderson’s seven-year-old will be making only his third start in what has been a rather uninspiring career, but he hasn’t done much wrong in his two previous outings, getting off the mark at the first time of asking when winning around Kempton a couple of years ago. He followed that up with a runner-up at Punchestown in the Kildare Post Flat Race over today’s trip, finishing behind Yorkhill. If your selection is going to lose, that’s not a bad name to do it against, 2 ¼ lengths the beaten distance that day.

The best form on paper

Only two starts, granted, but on the form of those races, and the level of competition he has been in with, means nothing in this race can get anywhere near to touching him, certainly not on paper. He must overcome a sizeable absence, and we’re taking a bit of a shot in the dark on him being fit here, but I’m fully confident a respected yard wouldn’t have him out unless they thought he could do something.

Reading between the lines, it says a lot about the horse’s natural ability that connections have stuck with him, and they’ll lose nothing in experience with booking Aidan Coleman as jockey. Followers of the stats will tell us that the pilot boasts a fantastic strike rate on favourites in this sphere, and the clues are there that we should see Ok Corral roll back the years. If retaining any of his earlier class, the 8/13 currently being offered by Coral will look decent. Will boost up accas.
