Mata seems to now have proven himself to Jose Mourinho, after the Portuguese boss sold him on to Man Utd while the duo were at Chelsea, as the Spaniard started in the club’s first game of the season against Bournemouth.
Mata loves facing the Saints
The 28-year-old attacker took the opportunity to become the first person to find the net in an official match under the Mourinho era at Old Trafford, as he slotted home at Dean Court on the Red Devils’ way to winning 3-1.
After his scoring exploits, Mata may get the chance to start once again and he’ll certainly let Mourinho know of his record against Southampton.
In his last four starts against the Saints, the Spaniard has dispatched twice, including in the 3-2 victory at St Mary’s last season.
Mata was also a handful for Southampton while on Chelsea’s books, as he helped set up three goals against them.
Even if Mata is a substitute, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan pushing for a starting place, he is still likely to feature in some capacity, so will get the chance to be on target again.
