Beeves the bet on Sunday

Our NAP goes at Perth on a competitive day

We won’t get anywhere near the drama of Friday and Saturday’s Epsom Derby meeting, but there’s plenty to give punters an interest on Sunday, with UK and Irish racing scheduled at Fakenham, Perth, Kilbeggan and Listowel.

You can bet on every race at every meeting right here at Coral – the winners are just a click away. We focus on matters in Scotland, where a seven-race card gets started at 2.15pm. Read on as we detail our thinking in the day’s main event.

Beeves going for the hat-trick

There’s a bumper prize pool on offer in the main event, meaning we have a talented 12-runner field marked down for the City of Perth Gold Cup. A handicap chase disputed over two miles seven furlongs, course and distance winner Beeves carries our stake money.

Jennie Candlish sends out this vastly experienced 10-year-old gelding, with Sean Quinlan booked in the saddle. The selection arrives at course on an eye-catching run of recent form, winning each of his last two starts, claiming the Prince Carlton Handicap Chase at Fakenham back in March, smashing the field, including race favourite, and well-beaten runner-up, Fingerontheswitch who puffed home a full 10 lengths off the winner.

Not afraid of hard work

Plenty to like about that effort, and it was a sign of things to come, with Beeves doubling up at this track last time, getting home best over 2m 7f. Again, he went off at a nice price, but had to work a bit harder for the prize money that day, nudging out closest finisher Cultram Abbey by ½ a length. Connections celebrated, but knew just how close that one was, with the second closing the gap all the way. An extra furlong or two would’ve turned gold into silver for our boy.

That was only his second outing at the Scottish course – the first visit ending in a rather disappointing fourth from four. This looks as competitive a race as you’ll see on Sunday, but Beeves rides with confidence and will be fit, sharp and ready to complete the hat-trick.
