There have been some truly terrible haircuts sported across Euro 2016 and now pre-season, with Lionel Messi’s bleached blond bombshell with ginger beard look (after a close shave with the law) only the latest in a long line of barnet blunders and fashion faux pas by footballers.

Stylists across the globe have been horrified by the latest trend, which has also seen the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Marouane Fellaini and even Phil Jones opt for platinum locks.

So, before punters reach for the peroxide in an act of imitation – just take a look back at some previous cringe-worthy catwalk crops from football’s quirkiest.

Coral round up 10 of the most iconic/awful hair-dos to have graced the game for your viewing pleasure.

While, any Game of Thrones fans may enjoy this witty reference likening Messi’s new look to a link with a famous House…

Abel Xavier

When you even leave David Beckham’s hair in the shade you know you’ve set the bar. This bleach blonde cone-shaped effort from now Mozambique manager Xavier showed the former full back was ahead of his time. Having delighted fans of Liverpool and Everton previously with his crazy coiffures, which included matching blonde cornrows and beard, we think this Galaxy Quest-inspired effort is our favourite…

Giovanni Simeone

Yes that’s right, this is Diego Simeone’s 21-year-old son Giovanni sporting a combination of a ponytail, mullet and a shaved head. We can only think the River Plate striker lost a dare, otherwise we wouldn’t fancy drawing feisty dad Simeone Snr’s ire…

Taribo West

Opting for mini pig tails on top of cornrows and a shaven noggin is one thing, but dying them the limiest of greens to go with your Nigeria kit? Former Plymouth Argyle and Derby County defender West took patriotism to a new level.

Gervinho

Former Roma and Arsenal attacker Gervinho gave curtains a new meaning when he fashioned this look of parted dreadlocks complete with headband, later opting for a completely bald bonce with dreads dangling at the back. It didn’t catch on in England…

Ronaldo de Lima

‘Il Fenomeno’, also known as original Ronaldo, could do little wrong on the pitch for Brazil, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Real Madrid – but off the turf his talents did not extend to fashioning trends, as this ill-advised stag do-esque fringe shows. Imagine looking back at your World Cup-winning snaps with a haircut like this…

Carlos Valderrama

Move over Fellaini, there’s only room for one blonde ‘fro in football. Judging from recent pictures, Colombia legend Valderrama aka ‘The Kid’ has not forsaken the afro and moustache combo that made him such an icon in the ’80s.

Djibril Cisse

Ricardo Quaresma

Supposed to represent the Portuguese coat of arms, manager Fernando Santos called it “a work of art.” We’ll leave you to decide…

While another notable addition to the Euros catalogue of quiffs and coiffures was Ivan Perisic’s Croatia kit-inspired chequered flag.

Rodrigo Palacio

Affectionately dubbed “the Traumatized Jedi” style, this trailing rat-tail has certainly allowed Inter Milan striker Palacio to stand out on the pitch for all the wrong reasons.

David Beckham

Be it a sarong, a cornrow or a man-bun – Becks has never been shy! The superstar’s former side Man Utd are 3/1 second favourites to win the Premier League this season with Coral.
