Ayr preview: Kilbree Chief to call the shots

Kilbree Chief ran a blinder when runner-up on return to action after a lengthy lay-off, so can take advantage of what looks a handy mark to go one better in the 2m 4f novices’ handicap chase at Ayr today (14.35).
The Lucinda Russell trained gelding was a fairly useful hurdler in 2013/14 when winning once and finishing in the frame on three occasions to be rated 127 at his peak.
Kilbree Chief is now able to race off a career-low mark of 117, having shaped really well on his chasing debut at Sedgefield last time out following 20 months on the sidelines.
The eight-year-old looked in need of the outing and, after getting outpaced at halfway, rallied strongly from two out to be nearest at the finish an an 11 length runner-up to Lord Wishes.
It was a performance full of promise, and one which showed Kilbree Chief retained plenty of ability.
The son of Dr Massini is sure to strip much fitter for the outing and, if building on it, Kilbree Chief looks weighted to take all the beating on ground which holds no fears.
Punters want to Landmeafortune
In the 2m handicap hurdle that closes proceedings (16.15), Landmeafortune is a fascinating contender following a couple of eye-catching runs and looks decent value to open his account.
The gelding ran a couple of solid races in Irish points in 2014, finishing fourth on his debut at Castletown behind Chosen Well who is now rated 127 and third to the now 132-rated Shanroe Santos at Loughanmore.
Landmeafortune then joined Martin Todhunter and after four quiet runs put in a much improved effort on handicap debut at Hexham two starts back when staying on from off the pace after getting outpaced to finish a never nearer 12 3/4 lengths sixth of 10 to Miss Joeking.
The seven-year-old and backed that up with a solid third last time out at Sedgefield when keeping on well to be beaten just over five lengths, leaving the impression he was coming to the boil nicely.
If taking another step forward, then Landmeafortune’s current mark of 90 looks exploitable judged on his point form, and the testing conditions should bring his stamina into play.
