Tom Scudamore: “Kaizer is in good form, hopefully he can take advantage”

Coral ambassador discusses his return and this weekend’s rides

I was delighted with the way my comeback went last weekend.

I knew Dave [Pipe] was going to run some nice horses, and once I got the all clear from the physio and the doctor, it was all systems go, and luckily we got a couple of winners on the board.

Saturday

Cheltenham 14.35 – Kaizer

My first ride of the new season at Cheltenham is Kaizer for Alistair Whillans. He’s won his last two so is clearly in good form, but this is a step up in class, taking on the likes of Torpillo and Quel Destin. However, with that race fitness on his side, hopefully he can take advantage of that.

Cheltenham 16.20 – Ramses De Teillee

Ramses De Teillee is better known for being a classy staying chaser, and he ran some super races over fences last season, including a second in the Coral Welsh National, although it just didn’t work out for him at Aintree.

He’s still a novice over hurdles, so this is a good starting point for the new season, when once again we’ll be targeting all those big National-type races.

He’s still a young horse though, and with some luck we might be able to pick up a staying novice hurdle with him.

Cheltenham 17.30 – Grumpy Charley

I ride Grumpy Charley in the Bumper. He came with a big reputation having won his point-to-point bumper, but couldn’t quite follow up under rules at Exeter on his next run.

He’s since come to the Pipes, and we should find out more about him after this, in what looks a competitive early season contest.

Sunday

Wincanton 13.00 – Airton

Airton started his hurdling career really well, finishing in the first three in each of his first three starts, but his form tailed off after that and he does need to get back on track now.

Wincanton 13.35 – Speedy Buck

We can ignore Speedy Buck’s last run, I thought he’d gone wrong and pulled him up when in contention at the third last.

That was over hurdles, he’s built to make a chaser, and so his runs over the smaller obstacles were encouraging, even though he didn’t manage to get his head in front.

Michael’s [Scudamore} horses are running well so he could run well at a decent price.

Wincanton 15.20 – Paricolor

Paricolor was due to run at Kempton last Sunday but just needed a slightly longer break after his previous run at Wetherby, where he’d run well to finish second, so hopefully he can build on that encouraging performance.

Wincanton 15.55 – Huccaby

There’s no getting away from it, Huccaby has been disappointing. He wasn’t on his best behaviour at Wincanton last time, and we’re hoping he’ll just grow up a bit as he gains more experience, but for now you’d have to keep a watching brief.

Wincanton 16.30 – Dream Machine

My final ride of the weekend is Dream Machine in the handicap hurdle.

He’s made a good start to his hurdling career, winning at Bangor back in June, although perhaps things haven’t quite gone as well as we hoped since then, he may just be a horse that needs everything to fall right for him which hopefully will be the case here!
