Betting preview and odds for Premier League match

Liverpool have the chance to go back top of the Premier League with victory over Southampton tonight. But they might have their work cut-out on the South Coast.

The Saints have picked up 24 points from 16 matches in the Premier League since Ralph Hasenhuttl’s appointment in December, compared to nine in 14 matches under Mark Hughes.

Can the Austrian keep the run going live on Sky Sports Main Event from 7:45pm? Or will Liverpool march on with their fifth win in a row in all competitions?

Head-to-Head

The Reds haven’t only mastered taking Southampton’s players. They’ve also become well acquainted with taking points off the Saints too. Jurgen Klopp’s men have won three in a row against tonight’s opponents without so much as conceding a goal.

A Wesley Hoedt own-goal alongside strikes from Joel Matip and Mohamed Salah proved enough for the spoils when the sides last met at Anfield.

Likely XIs

Klopp could name an unchanged side for the visit to St Mary’s. Virgil van Dijk is expected to overcome an ankle issue to partner Matip, while Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Salah will retain their spots up-front.

Naby Keita could come in for James Milner in the only likely change to the side that beat Tottenham Hotspur last week.

Southampton could also stick with the same XI who saw off Brighton & Hove Albion six days ago. That would mean starts for Reds old boy Danny Ings and freshly-capped England international James Ward-Prowse in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Saints vs Liverpool - Football tactics and formations

Key Battles

It’s not just Liverpool’s front three you have to contain these days. It’s their flying full-backs too. Andy Robertson is level for the joint-most assists by a full-back in a single season in the Premier League, while Trent Alexander-Arnold also boasts a mean delivery on the other side.

Ryan Bertrand and youngster Yan Valery will have their work cut out, especially with the latter being sent off at Old Trafford last month. Hasenhuttl will also have to manage his side’s press against a team which play in a similar style but with better players.

That means the likes of defensive duo Oriol Romeu and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will have to be on their game to counter Georginio Wijnaldum and co. in the Liverpool midfield.

Match Odds

Liverpool are expected to maintain their good form at 2/5. Southampton are out at 7/1, with a first Draw between the pair in four meetings available at 7/2.

Mane has been the man in best form for the Reds with seven goals in his last six matches. It’s 23/20 he nets again, although it’s Salah who piques our interest against one of his favourite clubs.

The Egyptian has scored in each of his last three matches against the Saints. He’s 6/5 Anytime or 10/3 to Score Last for the second match in a row versus Hasenhuttl’s men.

Regardless this should be a tight match between two teams still in need of points. It’s 10/11 for Both Teams to Score and 7/1 about a 2-1 win for the Reds.
