Racing Tips: Beware The Bear to claim Coral Scottish Grand National win?

| 13.04.2019

Saturday’s racing odds, tips and preview

There’s another weekend of live racing in front of the ITV cameras, with nine races coming from Newbury and Ayr.

After the Grand National at Aintree last weekend, attention now turns to Ayr. The 2019 Coral Scottish Grand National gets underway at 3:35pm, with the close field making for an exciting race.

We cast our eye over today’s biggest live races, complete with another round of tips…

Iconic Choice – 2:10 Newbury

The three-year-old filly is a bit of a long shot in the betting, but her rate of progression and consistency stands in her favour.

Iconic Choice has won her only other run over this course and distance, with a 66% win rate over similar going too. That win in October allowed her to show a strong finish, eventually winning by 2 1/2l.

After a 190-day break the filly, who’ll be ridden by Richard Kingscote, will want to show the rest of the field the pedigree she has. Providing she can maintain the current rate of race-by-race improvement being shown, she should be competing at the front of the field.

Mohaather – 2:40 Newbury

Mohaather is already showing the form of a fine colt, and the three-year-old has already claimed two wins of his three career races. He placed in his first run too, coming second by 3 3/4l.

An impressive showing to claim his first win at Nottingham by a short-head was backed up by a course and distance win in The Horris Hill Stakes back in October, proving the calibre of the raider in his early career.

With the 2,000 Guineas approaching, it could be a good chance for jockey Jim Crowley to iron out any flaws in the trial run. He’s not fully developed yet and could be further improved, so if Crowley and trainer Marcus Tregoning can fine-tune him, he’ll be in contention to grab a third successive win.

Beware The Bear – 3:35 Ayr

It’s time for the 2019 Coral Scottish Grand National, where Beware The Bear looking in fine form to provide a threat to those tipped to head the field in Ayr.

The nine-year-old gelding won the ultra-competitive Ultima Handicap at the Cheltenham Festival, and has won twice since the blinkers have gone on, including a 1 1/4l win over Vintage Clouds in the Festival Trophy Handicap Chase.

The Nicky Henderson-trained horse has been given an extra 9lb by the handicapper and sits at a weight of 11st 12lb, but still commands the respect of the field and should be among the front runners throughout with four wins from nine on similar going.
