Our racing ambassador looks ahead to Newbury

Saturday – Newbury

1.40 – Laraaib

I am very much looking forward to riding him. He has been working nicely at home and he finished off last season by winning the Cumberland Lodge.

It looks a good race as you have Defoe and Young Rascal in there too. The latter I have ridden to victory on his last two starts so I know him very well.

My horse is ready to go and I think he is going to have a great season. He is a big horse and only now is he starting to fill his frame. This could be a springboard to bigger and better things as the year goes on.

2.40 – Mohaather

I won on this horse in a 6f sprint at Nottingham last season and then he surprised us all by winning the Horris Hill.

He is by Showcasing who all like a bit of cut in the ground and he will get that tomorrow. I have been down to Marcus Tregoning’s yard in Whitsbury and he is going very well.

With Too Darn Hot out, it opens it up a bit more. He is fit and ready to go so I am sure he will be thereabouts.

3.15 – Ibraz

I haven’t ridden this horse so far this year but I have seen him. We are a little concerned about the ground.

He is by Farhh who did win the Champion Stakes on cut in the ground so he may well handle it. He is in good order and if he does act on the ground, he will go well.

Wafy is also in this race. He is a very well-bred horse who was a little disappointing last season. He won a nice race at Sandown in 2017 but has not really kicked on from that.

He will definitely like a bit of juice in the ground but he needs to take a step forward from last season.

4.25 – Aql

Brian Meeham’s horses all know their job as he has fantastic facilities and I have had a lot of success at Newbury for him.

I don’t know much about this horse but I am sure his preparation for his racecourse debut has been good.

5.35 – Time For A Toot

He is owned by a good friend of mine, Peter Winkworth. He went over to France on his last starts where he didn’t quite stay the 10 furlongs at Saint-Cloud. The fact he is coming back down to handicap company will help. There is a slight doubt about the trip, being an Oasis Dream, so we are hoping for the best.

I have had a really busy week with all the trials coming up. I was Newmarket earlier in the week where I have been sitting on some nice horses.

I am looking forward to the Craven Meeting next week and the month ahead. Jash is one of the horses we are excited about ahead of Guineas weekend. He was second in the Middle Park and will probably go straight to the 2000 Guineas now.

The big races come around very quickly which suits you if you have an exceptional horse but a lot of them now shy away from the trials for the fear of having a tough time.

He then returned to the flat to ride for sister-in-law Amanda Perrett. After years of hard work, Jim was finally rewarded when we won the 2016 Stobart Flat Jockey Championship with an incredible 148 winners. That was followed by a lucrative retained partnership with leading owner Sheikh Hamdan al-Maktoum, for whom he is the no.1 jockey.
