Is Mo Salah on course to retain his crown?

We’re just over midway through another exciting Premier League season filled with exciting attacks and leaky defences.

Strikers are still banging in goals for fun, but this year, midfielders have stepped up to the plate and are chipping in with a few of their own.

Mohamed Salah scored a record 32 goals in the league last season, and after another slow start, he’s found his shooting boots again.

The Coral News Team look at the front runners at this stage of the season, and throw in a few who could yet mount a surge to take the crown…

Mo Salah

Dubbed the ‘Egyptian King’ by the Anfield faithful, Salah came out of the traps misfiring by last season’s standards, notching only five goals in his first 11 league games.

In his next 11 the Liverpool attacker managed to rediscover the form that took him to the Golden Boot, finding the net nine times including a hat-trick in a tricky away tie at Bournemouth.

The reigning champ is currently favourite to retain the crown, with odds of 13/8.

Harry Kane

Off the back of his Golden Boot-winning summer at the World Cup in Russia, Kane has picked up where he left off and looks to be a constant threat to Salah.

This season has seen Kane provide a steady stream of goals for Tottenham, as well as increase the number of assists provided for others. He’s already improved on his assists tally from last season this time around, a stat which could influence where the Golden Boot goes at the end of the campaign if the top scorers are tied on goals.

Another slight worry is the knock he took on his ankle in their last match against Manchester United, which could put him out of action for a number of weeks. Even still, the England captain is 3/1 to pick up the award.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Auba is currently top of the goalscoring charts too, alongside last season’s top two. The Gabon international has been on fire since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018.

Scoring 14 already this campaign in an Arsenal side that have sometimes struggled to click, it shows the predatory instincts of the front man, especially since nailing down the role of first-choice striker over Alexandre Lacazette.

Currently sat at second favourite to pick up the top Goalscorer award, we’ve got odds of 11/4 on Pierre.

Best of the rest

Both Eden Hazard and Sergio Aguero sit behind the top three with 10 goals apiece. Aguero is the more likely of the two to push on over the latter half of the season and compete with the top three.

The Man City front man is a 6/1 fourth favourite at present, with Chelsea winger Hazard at 16/1 after adopting his new role as a false nine.

Raheem Sterling, Callum Wilson and Richarlison are all on nine league goals. You can get Sterling to win the crown at 40/1, Wilson slightly further out at 50/1 and Richarlison heavily unfavoured at 100/1.

Outsiders?

Manchester United’s form has picked up again of late after getting rid of Jose Mourinho. Temporary boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given Marcus Rashford the starting striker role over Romelu Lukaku, with Anthony Martial out on right left.

Rashford and Martial look to be thriving in their new roles so far, but Lukaku is always on the fringes waiting to take his chance. All three sit at 66/1 to pick up the Golden Boot.
