Coral ambassador discusses Red Devils’ issues

Manchester United got the result they needed against Young Boys on Tuesday and they have qualified from what was a tough group, facing Juventus and Valencia, with a game in hand.

Compare that to Tottenham, who have one of their best ever starts to a Premier League season and Liverpool who are meant to be the real deal, yet both of those clubs may not make it through to the last 16 of the competition.

And yet Jose Mourinho is under pressure once again.

United fans and former players are not happy with the way the team is playing. But although it is dull and boring at times, Jose also seems to find a way of getting results when he needs them.

There was a lot of talk about how he reacted to Marcus Rashford’s miss. I don’t have a problem with that and it’s not a new characteristic of Jose’s.

I remember when he hooked Joe Cole off after just 15 minutes in a game when he was Chelsea manager. He is what he is and Jose will not change, because that is what has brought him so much success over the years.

I don’t see United finishing in the top four at the end of the season. Their players just don’t seem to enjoy playing his way.

If you go right through their team, other than David De Gea and possibly Luke Shaw, you can say they are all capable of doing better, whether that is Pogba, Rashford, Martial, Sanchez or Lukaku.

You can argue that it is the manager’s job to get the most from his players but they also have to be held accountable.

I am not inside the camp but looking from the outside, their players just don’t seem to want to play for their manager and so I don’t see him being there in the long-term.

When you put everything into the mix, his body language, the players’ body language, despite the Champions League qualification, all does not look well.

Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer played his entire career at the top level of English football, winning the Premier League title with Blackburn in 1994-95. The following summer he signed for his hometown club, Newcastle United, for a then world record £15 million fee.

He ended his playing career with a record 260 Premier League goals, which still stands today. He also won 63 caps for England, including 34 as captain, and among his 30 international goals were five scored at Euro 96, a total that won him the Golden Boot at that tournament.

Now the chief pundit on Match Of The Day, Alan was one of the first two players inducted into the Premier League Hall Of Fame this year.
