Preview and odds for Nations League clash

Denmark and the Republic of Ireland conclude their UEFA Nations League business tonight in Aarhus.

The Dane’s have already topped group B4, while Martin O’Neill’s Ireland are already relegated.

There’s pressure building on the Ireland manager after a run of one win in 10 and only four goals in eight games. Can his side grab a much-need morale-booster tonight? It’s all live on Sky Sports main event, with a 7.45pm kick-off.

Head-to-head

Tonight’s contest will be the 16th meeting between the two teams. Ireland have won five times to the Danes’ four, with six draws.

But it’s Denmark who have had the upper hand in recent years. They knocked Ireland out in a World Cup play-off 12 months ago in a bruising 5-1 win at the Aviva Stadium. October’s Nations League meeting in Dublin ended 0-0.

Ireland’s poor form is also seen in their struggles in front of goal. They’ve bagged only four times in eight games this year.

Likely XIs

O’Neill could choose tonight to welcome a new era, with Southampton’s 18-year-old striker Michael Obafemi poised to make his debut.

West Ham United’s Declan Rice remains absent as he contemplates whether to commit to Ireland or England, while James McClean is suspended. Sheffield United’s Enda Stevens could deputise.

Derry City’s Ronan Curtis looked lively in Thursday’s 0-0 with Northern Ireland, and could be given a bigger role.

Denmark manager Age Hareide may choose to make changes, now they’ve secured promotion. Christian Eriksen and Thomas Delaney both played the full 90 minutes in Cardiff, and may be not play the full game tonight.

Key battles

While bemoaning the lack of a Robbie Keane-esque striker, O’Neill has stuck to a number of defensively-minded tactics. Tonight is likely to be more of the same.

That’ll allow Denmark to dictate the match. It remains to be seen how seriously they take this game though, having already achieved promotion.

Ireland skipper Seamus Coleman will put in his usual energetic shift down the right flank, while Scott Hogan and Callum Robinson are likely to be tasked with the lone-striker role.

Match odds

This may be a dead rubber, but odds of 6/1 for Ireland to win tonight highlight the Emerald Isle’s slump in 2018.

The Danes are 8/13, while a draw is 27/10.

Kasper Dolberg and Nicolai Jorgensen are 4/1 favourites to score first, with Robinson and Hogan doing likewise at 10/1 for the visitors.

There’s 7/2 apiece about Robinson and Hogan anytime, although given their struggles in front of goal lately, 6/5 says Denmark win to nil.
