Latest odds for the richest race on turf

The world’s richest turf race is almost upon us, with all 12 places for Saturday’s $13m Everest now taken up at a cost of $600,000 per slot. Britain and Ireland are represented by Aidan O’Brien, who saddles U S Navy Flag.

You can watch the race live from Royal Randwick at 6:15am in the UK, on At The Races. Before that, check out the Coral News Team’s horse-by-horse guide for the 6f sprint below.

Redzel

Won four on the bounce prior to claiming the maiden Everest last year but has triumphed just three times in seven runs since. Finished outside the front two once in last 10 runs at Randwick (last) and has a plum draw here.

Santa Ana Lane

Only won three times over 6f but two of those have been since May. Anthony Freedman’s charge is in the form of his career after landing the Group 2 Premiere Stakes last month.

Le Romain

Only won once since May 2017 but is a Randwick regular and won over 6f here in August. Chalked up as the outsider but could challenge if the rain comes for the six-year-old.

Trapeze Artist

Among the favourites but will need to improve on disappointing runs in a pair of Group 2 contests recently. Behind fellow Everest contenders Santa Ana Lane, Shoals and In Her Time at Randwick last time out.

Vega Magic

Runner-up to Redzel last year and comes into this off similarly impressive form after finishing a neck-fourth to Humidor in Group 1 company. Connections will pray the forecast rain doesn’t arrive.

Brave Smash

Darren Weir’s charge has won once in eight attempts over 6f but showed good heart to go close in the Moir Stakes in September. Winning record is a worry but connections are confident of another place challenge after last year.

Osborne Bulls

A late entrant after Home Of The Brave was scratched. The Godolphin-charge has won eight from 12 and finished fifth in the Jungle Cat last time out. Has a nice draw in stall five and will likely have a strong finish.

U S Navy Flag

UK and Irish eyes will be trained on U S Navy Flag as O’Brien goes for his first win in the race. His inclusion suggests connections are confident, especially after victory in the July Cup at Newmarket. Can handle all conditions and has a terrific strike-rate over 6f. One to watch.

In Her Time

Went close in the Premiere Stakes last time out and has a decent record over 6f. Draw hasn’t been kind to her, though, while forecast significant rain will seriously put pay to the mare’s chances.

Shoals

Defeat by a head in the Premiere last time out is the only blemish on the filly’s record over 6f. Comfortable on all surfaces but would relish some serious speed in the race, which she may get off a rail side draw.

Viddora

One that keeps shortening in the betting and it’s easy to see why after victory over 5f in the Moir Stakes. A 7½l defeat on good-to-soft at Morphetville in May suggests preference for a sound track. Gate 12 draw makes her task even harder.

Graff

The only three-year-old entered, which ensures he’ll carry a lighter weight than his elders. Has run consistently in Group company this term and could progress again despite a difficult draw.
