Which players head the market to be Champions League top scorer?
Latest odds on UCL Golden Boot
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have shared Champions League top scorer honours in each of the last 11 seasons. Only Neymar has come between them during that time – finishing level with the pair on 10 goals in 2015.
Can any of the trio top the charts this time around? The Coral News Team have gone through all of the main competitors.
Lionel Messi (9/2)
Barcelona’s mini-magician may be the favourite but he hasn’t walked away as UCL top scorer since sharing the award in the 2014-15 season.
The Argentine bagged six goals last season – his joint worst return in the competition – as Barca departed at the quarter-final stage.
Cristiano Ronaldo (5/1)
There’s no stopping Ronaldo in the Champions League. The Portuguese ace scored 15 goals last year to finish the tournament as top scorer for the sixth season in a row.
New employers Juventus will be hoping he can replicate his tally of nine goals in last year’s group stages against Manchester United, Valencia and Young Boys.
Sergio Aguero (8/1)
The second Argentine in this list has long been terrorising defences domestically. But Aguero has never quite hit the same heights on the continent.
He managed just four strikes last time around as Manchester City crashed out to Liverpool in the quarter-finals. Eight goals the previous season, including back-to-back hat-tricks, remains his best Champions League return.
Luis Suarez (10/1)
It’s difficult for Suarez living in the shadow of Messi. The Uruguayan has managed just four European goals in his last 19 appearances.
The last eight top scorers have all hit double-figures in the competition – something which Suarez has yet to achieve.
Robert Lewandowski (10/1)
Polish star Lewandowski has started the season with six goals in five matches. He’ll hope to add to that tally in a group containing Benfica, AEK Athens and Ajax.
Bayern Munich’s main man has never bettered his tally of 10 goals from the 2012-13 campaign when he reached the final with Borussia Dortmund.
Best of the rest
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is next best at 12/1, ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane at 16/1 The Paris Saint-Germain trio of Edinson Cavani, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar are also available to back at 16/1 apiece.
Gareth Bale will be expected to step up to the plate at 20/1 in the absence of Ronaldo. He’ll be hoping for a better return than his watershed of six during the 2013-14 season. Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid pair Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa are 25/1 and 33/1 respectively, a price the latter shares with Romelu Lukaku.
