What will Alex McLeish bring to Scotland in his second stint?
How ‘Eck’ has started to turn things around ahead of Nations League
The appointment of Alex McLeish as Scotland boss in February looked to many like a matter of mutual convenience.
McLeish was in charge of the national team in 2007 and was responsible for arguably Scotland’s greatest every victory. A 1-0 win against France in Paris.
However, after moving on to Birmingham City later that year, his managerial career hasn’t hit those heights consistently again.
He is back leading the Tartan Army now, and the Coral News Team look at how he can bring back the good days and qualify for Euro 2020.
Fresh start
After failing to qualify for the World Cup. Scotland have gone for what they know.
McLeish may have only won a single match in his four games since his comeback, but is ready to start afresh.
Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson are two of the nation’s brightest stars. Coincidentally both left-backs.
Robertson has been given the captaincy and Scotland coach James McFadden said he was the ‘outstanding candidate’ for the job.
They’re 13/8 to win their Nations League group. If they can find room for both men, then the new Scotland could be driven on by two roving full-backs.
Men in form
The new boss’ latest squad for games against Belgium and Nations League tie against Albania features nine players with five international caps or fewer.
Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser is in, as well as Rangers man Ryan Jack who’s picking up his second cap after a solid start to the season.
McLeish is also giving Hearts defender John Souttar his debut after helping Hearts to top of the Scottish Premier League.
Further experience
The former Rangers and Aston Villa manager was impressive in his first spell at the helm of the national team ten years ago.
In the 10 games McLeish was in charge he claimed a 70% win ratio. Winning seven and losing three games.
He has since gone on to manage clubs in Belgium and Egypt in recent years, accumulating valuable experience.
The appointment may have been met with some groans but if they can beat Albania next Monday then the Tartan Army could start roaring again.
