Odds and tips for the Misano GP

After the disappointment of the first cancelled MotoGP race since 1980 at Silverstone last time out, attention this weekend turns to the San Marino Grand Prix.

Rain forced the postponement of the British GP a fortnight ago. But that shouldn’t be a problem across the next few days, with sunshine forecast to bathe the Misano circuit all weekend.

Marc Marquez will be looking to extend his championship lead once again. And the Coral News Team has previewed the race below.

Will Marquez edge closer to the title?

It’s difficult to see anyone toppling Marquez at the top of the MotoGP standings. The Honda rider is 59 points clearer of closest rival Valentino Rossi with just seven races left to go.

His ultra-consistent form this season has produced five races wins and nine podium finishes from the 11 races so far. He’s a demon around San Marino, too.

The Spaniard made light work of his rivals 12 months ago to chalk up a fifth win at Misano in his last eight attempts. He’s the 2/1 favourite again this weekend as Honda bid for a fourth successive win in the republic.

Can anyone stop the champion?

Valentino Rossi may be second in the standings but his Yamaha team have struggled this season. The Japanese manufacturer has failed to win a single race this term. Rossi is out to 6/1 to win this weekend, with teammate Maverick Vinales slightly further back at 7/1.

Indeed, it’s the Ducatis who have been the ones to beat of late. Jorge Lorenzo picked up his third win of the season in Austria last time out, while Andrea Dovizioso took the chequered flag in the Czech Republic.

Both stand little realistic chance of making up the points they require on Marquez. But a third success in as many races between them isn’t out of the question. Lorenzo is 9/4 to win here for the fourth time. Dovizisio has yet to finish better than third at Misano but is 10/3 for the win.

What chance Cal Crutchlow?

Cal Crutchlow had his hopes dashed by the rain at Silverstone a fortnight ago. The Briton was 11/1 to win a maiden British GP before a washout put pay to his chances. He’s 20/1 to make amends for that enforced disappointment at San Marino this week.

But he’ll need to improve on a series of dismal showings at Misano. Crutchlow has never finished above sixth around the circuit. He could only achieve a 13th place finish 12 months ago.

His form this year suggests he should mount a decent challenge, though – the Honda rider has returned home fifth or better in five of the 11 races so far. His Honda tends to perform better around the twistier circuits, so he should be guaranteed a decent run here.
