Saturday racing preview, odds and tips

The St Leger isn’t far away, but it’s all about Sandown, Chester and Beverley in-front of the ITV cameras this afternoon.

Ed Chamberlin and co. will be parked up at the Esher course for four cracking renewals, including the Atalanta Stakes and the Solario Stakes.

And with contests including the Beverley Bullet and Chester Stakes in-between, it’s sure to be another exciting card on ITV4. You can check out our tips for the televised action below.

Take Cover – 2:45 Beverley

It wasn’t to be for Take Cover in the Nunthorpe. David Griffiths’ veteran put up a valiant fight but was ultimately well held in the Group 1 contest. Today’s task looks much more straightforward, though.

The 11-year-old won this contest by over a length from Final Venture 12 months ago. The pair line-up again this afternoon, with Take Cover having run extremely well in a series of Group races since. A second behind Battaash at Glorious Goodwood stands out as a cracking piece of form.

If he can get to the front early on again here, he’ll be a tough nut to crack over his favourite 5f distance.

Awesometank – 3:00 Sandown

Veracious is considered by many to be a good thing in the Atalanta Stakes. But with six runners pencilled in for the 1m test, it’s the each-way angle that’s of most interest at the current prices.

Of the five remaining, Awesometank makes the most appeal after her recent win in the Listed Coral Distaff at Sandown. Rival Laugh Aloud is coming back off a 455-day break, while Winter Lightning has been strutting her stuff on the dirt out in Meydan.

That makes William Haggas’ filly the prime candidate to improve on a career best performance last time out, and scoop up some each-way value for punters.

Red Force One – 2:25 Sandown

It’s hard to ignore a progressive horse like Red Force One. Tom Dascombe’s charge is bidding for the four-timer at Sandown after reeling off successes at Bath, Chester and Newbury.

He’s defied a gradual rise in the weights in each of those and must overcome another 7lb from the handicapper in this one. It won’t be easy, but the Lethal Force gelding receives weight all round here under Josephine Gordon

The addition of a visor has really enlivened the three-year-old’s prospects of late. He’s taken to continue that good form over 1m 2f.
