Odds and tips as the Williams sisters go head-to-head

Simona Halep, Andy Murray and the two-time Grand Slam winner Garbine Muguruza have all been downed in the tournament so far.

As we near the end of week one, there’s some intriguing match-ups with some big names already paired up.

The Coral News Team take a look at some of the ties you can’t miss…

Rafael Nadal to beat Karen Khachanov in straight sets – 8/13

Nadal will be desperate to get the job done early when he steps on to the Arthur Ashe court just after 6:00pm today.

The defending US champion has had a relatively straight-forward route to round three, much in part to David Ferrer’s unfortunate injury in round one.

He’s beaten his opponent Karen Khachanov on each of their four meetings, including in Canada on the hard courts this year.

Khachanov did win a tour title in Marseille earlier this year but could be hard pushed to make the second week here.

Dominic Thiem to beat Taylor Harry-Fritz – 1/4

These two met at the US Open last year, when Thiem eventually got through in four sets.

We could expect much of the same again this time round. Fritz has downed a top ten player before, when he beat Marin Cilic at Indian Wells in 2017.

However, Thiem has a growing reputation and since reaching the French Open final earlier this year, he will feel he can go deep into this tournament too.

Victoria Azarenka to beat Sloane Stephens – 6/5

Over in the women’s draw one of the stand-out clashes is Azarenka’s tie with US Open champion Sloane Stephens.

Stephens has won the last two matches, but two-time Australian Open winner Azarenka holds a 3-2 advantage over her American counterpart.

This could go to three sets though, with Azarenka’s hard-hitting style one that may trouble the French Open finalist.

Stephens may have the home crowd backing her, but Azarenka’s could stop her in her tracks.

Serena Williams to beat Venus Williams in three sets – 11/4

When the clock strikes midnight all eyes will be on the Arthur Ashe as the Williams sisters lock horns once more.

Venus beat sister Serena in their last meeting. The 38-year-old won 6-3, 6-4 at Indian Wells this year.

However, the younger of the two sisters has dominated the pair’s meetings since 2009 winning five of the eight matches since then.

Serena may still be working her way back from maternity leave but the former world number-one could take this one.
