McGregor v Khabib finally announced for UFC 229

The Staples Center in Los Angeles played host to a cracker as UFC 227 lived up to its exciting billing.

The two title fights wowed and shocked in equal measure, while Dana White will have rubbed his hands in glee.

The Coral News Team runs through the main results of the night.

Dillashaw wins, Mighty Mouse defeated

TJ Dillashaw defended his bantamweight title in style, this time stopping Cody Garbran(d)t in the first round.

The original bout went a round further, but there was still plenty of action inside the 4:10 of this fight.

Herb Dean stopped it with just 50 seconds of the fight remaining as Dillashaw rained down punches on his opponent. He will now look to take on Henry Cejudo in another title defence.

That was after Cejudo caused a seismic shock by defeating Demetrious Johnson – arguably the best P4P fighter in the sport.

In winning the title off DJ, the 31-year-old ended the second-longest UFC title reign in history at five years, 10 months.

Elsewhere…

American Top Team contender Renato Moicano underlined his star credentials with a big win over home favourite Cub Swanson.

In the women’s game, there was a decent flyweight match-up between JJ Aldrich and Brazil’s Polyana Viana. The US star bagged the win as the fight went all three rounds.

Kevin Holland will have learned plenty in a unanimous defeat to Thiago Santos as he transitions from a Tuesday Night Contender TV show to a PPV main card.

Some huge match-ups in the coming months

DJ’s defeat will have shook Tyron Woodley to his core. The welterweight champion takes on Liverpool’s Darren Till next month at UFC 228.

And in even bigger news, the fight that every UFC wants to see was finally announced. Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov will finally get it on in the Octagon.

The lightweight title bout will take place on 6th October in Las Vegas as the Irish star finally returns to MMA.
