Preview, odds and tips for the Prem clash

Two of the Premier League’s heavyweights go head-to-head this evening as Manchester United welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford.

Spurs head north defending a spotless record in the league after clocking wins against Fulham and Newcastle United in their first two matches. Jose Mourinho will be looking for a response from his side after last weekend’s defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

You can catch the action live on Sky Sports Football or Sky Sports Main Event from 8pm tonight. But before that, why not check out our Big Match Breakdown.

Head-to-Head

Tottenham may have progressed into consistent top-four challengers, but they still find things difficult at Old Trafford. Mauricio Pochettino’s men have lost on their last four visits to this part of Manchester.

Anthony Martial scored the only goal in a 1-0 United victory in the same fixture last season. Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen were both on the scoresheet the last time Spurs won here in 2014.

Likely XIs

Jose Mourinho has a number of options available to him after last weekend’s defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. Antonio Valencia, Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard are all in line to start. Defensive changes could also be afoot after dismal performances from Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof. Luke Shaw looks set to miss out with a foot injury.

It should be as you were for Spurs at Old Trafford, with no new injury worries to concern Pochettino and co. Lucas Moura is expected to partner Harry Kane in a two up-top, which should allow Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen to form part of a five-man midfield.

United vs Spurs - Football tactics and formations

Key Battles

Two big name strikers dominate the pre-match talk ahead of this one but it’s the support acts that could hold the key to which way the match swings.

Alli, Eriksen and Anthony Martial have all found plenty of space and the back of the net in this fixture in recent years. Such attention to respective main men Kane and Romelu Lukaku could leave similar gaps once again.

That said, it’s United’s defence which looks most vulnerable. They’ll need to step things up from last weekend or face coming unstuck against a Spurs team which has pace, craft, power and guile in abundance.

Match Odds

Man United start the match at 6/4, with Spurs slightly longer at 9/5. You can back a first draw in nine matches between the pair at 11/5.

Kane broke his August duck against Fulham last week and is 5/4 to make it two in two tonight. Striking foe Lukaku is 7/4 to net his first goal against the Lilywhites in a United shirt.

Alli at 10/3 and Pogba – who has two goals in his first two matches – at 3/1 Anytime look the best of the midfield options.
