A look back at the best UEFA Super Cup finals

Spanish revolution returns to centre-stage

Real Madrid take on Europa League winners Atletico Madrid in the Super Cup final tomorrow night, with local bragging rights, as well as the showpiece trophy at stake.

Since the 2009 this one-off final has been dominated by the Spanish teams. There’s been at least one Spanish representative in eight of the nine finals.

This year’s match will be the fourth time in five years there’s been an all-Spanish match up.  Real Madrid are 6/4 to win their fifth title, while Atletico are at 19/10 to claim the trophy.

As the anticipation builds, The Coral News Team take a look back through the years at some of the best matches the Super Cup has served up…

2001 – Liverpool 3-2 Bayern Munich

As the new millennium began to take shape, Liverpool and Bayern Munich played out a thriller in Monaco.

John Arne-Riise, and a rampaging forward line of Emile Heskey and Michael Owen seemingly put the game out of sight by the 46^th minute for Liverpool.

The UEFA Cup winners were pegged back after an Owen Hargreaves corner was headed in by Hasan Salihamidzic in the 57^th minute.

The comeback looked on when Carsten Janker netted a second goal eight minutes from time.

But Liverpool held firm to give Gerard Houllier a famous win.

2012 – Atletico Madrid 4-1 Chelsea

Better known as the Falcao final. Chelsea had just won the Champions League for the first time in their history and were riding on a crest of a wave.

But a Radamel Falcao first-half hat-trick was the Columbian at the peak of his powers.

Gary Cahill grabbed a late consolation but that was only after Miranda added a fourth for Atletico.

It was a sign of things to come as Falcao went on to notch 34 goals in all competitions in the 2013-14 campaign and win the Copa del Rey.

2015 – Barcelona 5-4 Sevilla (AET)

This one definitely one for the neutral. A topsy-turvy fixture that saw Sevilla go 1-0 in front before Barcelona took over and cruised into a 4-1 lead.

Lionel Messi scored two free-kicks that on most other occasions would put the game out of sight.

But Sevilla stormed back, with Yehven Konoplyanka equalised in the 81^st minute to send the game into extra-time.

It would be Barca’s night as Pedro – on his last appearance for the club – bundled home a 115^th minute winner.

2016 – Real Madrid 3 v 2 Sevilla (AET)

Sevilla were back again. Another Europa League win saw them face Real Madrid in European football’s early-season showpiece.

Los Hispalenses were moments away from a famous victory before Sergio Ramos nodded home a 92^nd minute equaliser to level the score at 2-2.

The game moved into extra time but it was the sending off of Timothee Kolodziejczak that swung this one.

Dani Carvajal pierced through a tired Sevilla back line and gave his side their third Super Cup victory.
