Why Sergio Aguero should be Real Madrid’s Ronaldo replacement

Argentine is the ideal fit for Los Blancos

It’s a new era for Real Madrid. Not only has Zinedine Zidane left and been replaced by Julen Lopetegui in the hotseat.

But it’s also the first time in nine years they’ve started a campaign without Cristiano Ronaldo, who has exited for Juventus. The Portuguese wizard managed 44 goals in as many games last year, and many would deem him irreplaceable.

However, Real need to find the next best thing. And the Coral News Team think it could be Sergio Aguero – linked once again with a move to Los Blancos – who could be the ideal fit…

Prolific hitman who knows La Liga inside out

There’s no question about Aguero’s record in front of goal. The 30-year-old has hit 20+ goals in each of the last four Premier League seasons.

He’s also been similarly impressive in the Champions League, with nine goals in 14 UCL games over the previous two campaigns.

As one of the world’s top strikers, playing with continental heavyweights Manchester City, that’s excellent pedigree in itself. But the Buenos Aires native will also take zero time to acclimatise to Spanish football.

Having spent five very successful years at Atletico Madrid – netting 100 goals in the process – he’s used to life in both the Spanish capital and La Liga.

He has big game pedigree

Perhaps no player in the game’s history has built the reputation that Ronaldo has for big-game displays. This is a man who’s scored in three separate Champions League finals, 16 El Clasicos and a European Championship semi-final.

However, Aguero is also a player who thrives under the kind of pressure that playing for Los Blancos brings.

His 94th-minute strike to end Man City’s 45-year wait for a league title in 2012 underlined his ice-cool composure. But it’s far from the only example.

As well as netting eight times in the Manchester derby, he’s struck the winner in an EFL Cup Final, a Copa America semi-final and more. Under the glare of the Santiago Bernabeu, few would handle the pressure better.

He’s used to a Lopetegui system

While Aguero hasn’t played under new Real boss Julen Lopetegui before, he’s very used to a Lopetegui system.

The Citizens played an attack-minded 4-3-3 based on pacy wide men last term, and it suited the clinical finishing and smart movement of Aguero to a tee.

It’s also the same system that Spain played under Lopetegui in this summer’s World Cup, and the friendly and qualifying games leading up to that.

Having also employed that set-up to great effect as a club boss with FC Porto (from 2014-16), there’s every chance Lopetegui will stick with a 4-3-3 at the Bernabeu. And Aguero would be a ready-made fit for it.
