Real Madrid ready to swoop for PSG star Cavani
Uruguayan ace linked with transfer to Spain
Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer to Juventus caused a big stir across Europe.
But now the dust has settled it’s left a huge void in Real Madrid’s attacking dynamic.
However it appears they’ve now turned their attention to Paris Saint-Germain star Edinson Cavani.
The Coral News Team take a look at how the Uruguayan could fit in at the Santiago Bernabeu…
Selfless
The 31-year-old was the main-man for Uruguay in the World Cup but he has always been a players’ player.
His versatility across the front-line will suit new Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui’s possession- based style of play.
Cavani laid on 11 goals in all competitions for PSG last season. This proves he can make the correct decision in the most decisive areas of the pitch.
The big personality lost by the departure of Ronaldo will now be supplemented by a wider spread of players taking responsibility.
Goal-machine
Cavani often draws criticism for getting in the right areas but not scoring enough goals.
This was often true in the early part of his Ligue 1 career. The caveat being he was often marginalised by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
But since the Swedish talisman has left Cavani has plundered goals.
He notched 49 goals in 50 games in 2016/17. And then followed that up with 40 strikes in 48 games last season.
If he can match that record in La Liga – coupled with the goals from Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale – then he will be a real threat.
Bolster squad
A reported £88 million is being muted. What was seen as an eye-watering deal ten years ago may only get a half-hearted shrug of surprise now.
Other targets mentioned have been Eden Hazard as well as Cavani’s team-mates Kylian Mbappe and Neymar. But they could command a figure north of £150 million which may be too much – even for Los Blancos.
However if Madrid can tie up a deal for under £90 million then they can look to retain funds for other areas of the squad.
Lopetegui will want to stamp his authority and but think to keep his powder dry.
