The West Sussex Downs plays host to one of the flat season’s most stylish festivals in Glorious Goodwood.

There are four days of top-class with intriguing battles between horses, trainers, and self-confessed fashionistas.

The Coral News Team talks you through four of the key talking points of this year’s event.

Without Parole v Expert Eye

It’d be practically impossible to discuss a horse racing festival without mentioning the racing itself.

And Without Parole taking on Expert Eye in the Sussex Stakes is arguably the most exciting duel of the entire four days.

Dubbed the Duel on the Downs, John Gosden’s Without Parole will look to continue his unbeaten run against Sir Michael Stoute’s charge.

It should be a battle that lights up day two at Goodwood.

Style wins you points

It’s not exactly Royal Ascot but you still have to make the effort in Sussex. And it’s not just the ladies, either.

Goodwood presents the more stylish men among us with the opportunity to stand out from the crowd. So leave the jeans and trainers behind and think about investing in a pair of two-tone brogues with a pair of hemmed, slim-cut trousers.

And while you’re at it, go with a double-breasted jacket and some funky-coloured socks. After all, we’re still in the midst of summer.

The Magnolia Cup

One of the best things about Glorious Goodwood is the Magnolia Cup.

12 leading women of business, sport, fashion, medicine, and media jump in the saddle in aid of Cancer Research UK. And the majority of them won’t ever have raced before up until a couple of months beforehand.

It’s been running for seven years now and raised over £1.2m for the charity.

Johnston on for Glorious return

One man who’s been more successful than most in West Sussex has been Mark Johnston.

The vet-turned-trainer has won 69 races over the years at Goodwood, including five Goodwood Cups.

 And, in addition, the North Yorkshire-based man is also on the verge of becoming the most successful British-based trainer of all time.

The record of 4,193 domestic winners trained by the retired Richard Hannon looks likely to be broken in the coming month. However, it’s unlikely to be here as Johnston only has around 30 runners in this year’s festival.

Keeper your eyes peeled for that event later in the month, though.
