England have been installed as second-favourites to win the World Cup following Tuesday night’s dramatic penalty shootout victory over Colombia.

The Three Lions edged past Falcao and co. 4-3 on spot-kicks and have seen their tournament odds cut once again as a result.

From 16/1 at the start of World Cup, Gareth Southgate’s men are now just 7/2 to become world champions for the first time since 1966.

“It’s the shortest price England have been at this stage of the World Cup for decades. Perhaps it’s the easier draw, or maybe even that their luck is turning with last night’s penalty victory, but there’s a real feeling that this really could be the year for the Three Lions”, reckoned Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead.

Quarter-finals next

It’s Sweden up next for England in the quarter-finals on Saturday. And our traders make the Three Lions odds-on to reach their first semi-final since Italia 90.

Southgate’s fearless young squad are 20/23 to do the business in Samara and qualify in normal time. It’s 2/5 for outright progression, with Sweden rated a 19/10 shot to go through and 19/5 to win inside 90 minutes.

Golden Boot glory?

Harry Kane will once again shoulder the goalscoring burden after netting his sixth goal of the tournament from the spot against Colombia.

The Tottenham Hotspur ace is the World Cup’s top scorer and is now heavily odds-on at 1/4 to win the Golden Boot. Fellow Spurs legend Gary Lineker was the last Englishman to finish top scorer at the tournament back in 1986.

SPOTY success?

Kane is also odds-on to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award at 4/6, ahead of Anthony Joshua at 6/1.

PR executive Aitkenhead added, ““Footballers have a great tradition of winning SPOTY, and the last time England made the semi-finals in 1990, it was Paul Gascoigne who scooped the award.”

“Should Harry Kane go on to win the golden boot and England repeat their last success it would be a certainty for Kane to win the award in December, and we make it odds-on in anticipation already.”
