World Cup star on the way to the PL?

Arsenal could be ready to usurp Liverpool for Croatia defender Domagoj Vida.

Reports suggest the Gunners have muscled in on a deal for the 29-year-old who is heavily interesting the Merseysiders.

Vida impressed for Croatia on their run to the World Cup final last month. The team only conceded four goals all tournament which was largely down to the defender’s leadership qualities.

Competition

West Ham have reportedly offered £19 million. But Besiktas would be looking for something in the region of £26.7m for a player who only joined the club in January.

However with Turkish club failing to qualifying for the Champions League he may feel this is best chance to move on.

Liverpool seem to be Arsenal’s main challengers though. Jurgen Klopp’s men can offer the Croatian elite European football.

However, one sticking point could be the Liverpool’s recent expenditure.

They may have got well over £100 million for Philippe Coutinho but that money has been spent on the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Naby Keita.

Klopp may also think he has more pressing issues like making a move for another forward to support Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

First team chances

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has said his spending is done unless something special comes up. He has a five-fold of defenders at the club but three of his options are under-23.

Emery could go with experience and partner the former Dynamo Kiev man with new man Sokratis. They would have a combined age of 60-years-old but have a wealth of experience.

However, he might plump for the up and coming Rob Holding or Calum Chambers alongside Vida.

The former Paris Saint-Germain boss may believe to steal a march on Liverpool in the race for a top-four finish he must strike the first blow by signing Vida now.
