Panama: Ones to Watch
Who do England need to stop on Sunday?
England take on Panama looking to secure the win needed to take them through to the last-sixteen.
The Three Lions made hard work of their tournament opener against Tunisia.
After starting quickly and going 1-0 up, it took until the 92nd minute to seal the victory.
Harry Kane came up with two goals to keep their World Cup dream alive and qualification on track.
However, they now come up against Panama. Their participation in Russia this summer is an underdog story in itself.
If they were to grab points off England here, then it would signal celebrations close to winning the whole thing!
To do so their star men must come to the fore and the Coral News Team run-down who could do the damage…
Tejada is Panama’s joint-record goal-scorer with 43 goals.
He made his debut in 2001 and has racked up 105 appearances in total.
The striker could replace Blas Perez as the focal point of the attack against England.
Tejada has scored goals everywhere he’s gone in a career that’s spanned 19 clubs.
It’ll be hard to hustle the England defence, but if he gets a chance at goal, records suggest he’ll take it.
Torres has written himself into Panama folklore after notching the vital goal against Costa Rica.
The 88th minute strike sent the nation to the World Cup for the first time in their history.
The 32-year-old has even been described as a ‘film star’ following his dramatic strike.
His bread and butter though is defending. The 6ft 3in centre-back could prove an immovable force in the Panama back-line.
However, he may have to write another Hollywood style script in this one.
Perez is another evergreen striker that Los Canaleros couldn’t afford to leave out of this squad.
The 37-year-old was named the best player at the 2007 Gold Cup and is tied on 43 goals for his country with team-mate Tejada.
Whether he starts the game or not, it’s certain he’ll make his presence felt at some point.
England won’t be able to take their foot off the pedal when he’s on the pitch.
