Bernd Leno: What will he bring to Arsenal?

How good is the German international?

When Arsenal signed Petr Cech from Premier League rivals Chelsea in 2015 it looked like a steal.

At 33-years-old the 6ft 5 goalkeeper would bring the winning mentality the Gunners had lacked for so long.

John Terry even went as far as saying he would be worth an extra 15 points to Arsenal across the season.

However, fast-forward three years and Arsenal have failed to qualify for the Champions League in two successive seasons. There seems to be a changing of the guard at the Emirates Stadium.

There’s a new man at the helm. Unai Emery has replaced Arsene Wenger.

And there’s now a new man between the sticks. 26-year-old German goalkeeper Bernd Leno looks to be Arsenal’s next number one.

The Coral News Team look at what Leno can bring to this Gunners side in need of a safe pair of hands…

Clean sheets

Bernd Leno comes in with a proven track record of keeping the ball out of the net! In the last four seasons, he’s been in the top five of the clean sheet stakes three times.

Since 2014 he has 45 Bundesliga shut-outs.  He has proven he can compete at elite level as well, having performed in the Champions League.

Leno has been Bayer Leverkusen’s first-choice since 2011 and was very much part of the furniture.

He has missed just four league games in his first six full seasons – not a single Bundesliga goalkeeper has managed more appearances.

This is something Arsenal desperately need if they’re going to crack the top four again!

Fresh face

There’s a new era dawning in North London this season. A new man in charge brings new ideas and some fresh faces.

Leno is the second arrival through the door in this new-look Arsenal side.

Some were worried the team had got too comfortable under Wenger but it seems Emery is bringing in players he trusts.

Leno is well known to many of the Arsenal players and he revealed a conversation with defender Shkodran Mustafi was key to his move to the Emirates.

The Arsenal faithful will hope he can hit the ground running and get the best out of a young defensive line-up.

If he does succeed then he’ll surely establish himself as a house-hold name in the Premier League.

Longevity

If Cech was for the here and now then Leno will be one for the present-and- future.

He may not be confirmed as the number one but the German is sure to take over from Cech this season.

Leno already has a wealth of experience for a 26-year-old having been made over 300 competitive appearances for Leverkusen.

He likes to take risks and put his body on the line that sometimes comes back to bite. Leno has been known to make the odd clanger.

But he is at a great age to grow and has already accomplished so much in the game. A new league, a new manager and new surroundings may be the making of him.

Only time will tell us just how good Leno will be.
