Three reasons Arsenal need to convince Jack Wilshere to stay

Midfielder could leave on a free transfer

After years of persistent injury woes, Jack Wilshere has returned to fitness and become an important member of the Arsenal squad again this season.

The 26-year-old has made 36 appearances in all competitions, the second-most of any midfielder at the club.

But he could still walk away from the Emirates on a free transfer this summer. Arsenal’s initial offer of an extension was turned down and reports suggest they’ve now put an improved deal on the table.

It’s going to be a busy summer for the Gunners. The Coral News Team have looked at three reasons why they should make sure Wilshere stays…

Check the technique

A side built around the creative influence of Mesut Ozil is never going to dominate games with physicality. For Arsenal to be at their best, they need intelligent and skilful players around Ozil to get their passing game going.

Wilshere fits that mould perfectly. He isn’t an automatic starter but his ability to link play and create space eases the burden on Ozil’s shoulders by offering another outlet.

Fan favourite

The times are changing at Arsenal. After 22 years of Arsene Wenger being in charge, this summer will bring plenty of upheaval.

As they wade through these uncertain waters, the fans won’t want to see a player that’s come through the ranks and gets the club then leave for nothing.

Wilshere still receives as good a reception as anyone at the Emirates. His departure wouldn’t go down well unless there are some big names coming in.

Insurance policy

In saying that, the new manager may not actually want Wilshere. They could see handing a big contract to someone with his injury history as a big risk.

If nothing else, giving him a contract would protect his value ahead of a potential sale.

If Chelsea were happy to pay £15m for Ross Barkley when he had less than six months on his contract, there’s certainly a market for Wilshere. And that would bring in a decent fee that could be reinvested.
