Managerial merry-go-round hotting up
At least three Premier League clubs will have a new manager in the dugout at the start of the 2018-19 season.
Arsenal remain rudderless in the absence of Arsene Wenger, West Ham United have yet to make a decision on David Moyes and Everton are without a boss after the sacking of Sam Allardyce.
There are a whole host of big-name managers waiting in the wings this summer. And the Coral News Team have picked out five of their favourites…
Laurent Blanc
Ex-Manchester United defender Laurent Blanc has been out of work since leaving Paris Saint-Germain in 2016. The 52-year-old won a hat-trick of Ligue 1 titles during his time with PSG to go alongside his sole success with Bordeaux in 2009.
Blanc hasn’t just been successful as a manager, though. He also won seven major honours as a player and was a part of the famous French side that lifted the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championships. In short, he brings a winning pedigree. For any ambitious Premier League club, he could be the perfect fit.
Frank de Boer
Things didn’t work out for Frank de Boer at Crystal Palace. The Dutchman lasted just four games at Selhurst Park after attempting – and failing – to impress a dynamic passing style on the Eagles.
That shouldn’t deter potential suitors, though. Managers don’t win four successive Eredivisie titles without having something about them. He still has the credentials to land a top job. Given the correct backing and appropriate time by a willing board, de Boer could prove to be a shrewd Premier League appointment.
Marco Silva
Marco Silva is a wanted man. The Portuguese tactician was the subject of an approach from Everton before being sacked by Watford in January. Sam Allardyce was eventually given the gig at Goodison Park. But that relationship has now been terminated, leaving Silva as the frontrunner for the gig on Merseyside.
The ex-Hull City boss has garnered plaudits from supporters and pundits alike after initially garnering suspicion following his appointment at the KCOM Stadium. Since then, eyes have been opened to how progressive the 40-year-old is as a coach. It would be a major shock if he wasn’t in a Premier League dugout for the start of next season.
Marcelo Bielsa
Marcelo Bielsa has long been touted for a job in the Premier League. Links to West Ham, Swansea City and Everton have all proved nothing more than just paper talk. But could his time finally come this summer?
The 62-year-old has won plaudits for his style of play at Marseille, Lazio and Lille alongside plum international jobs with Argentina and Chile. He may be slightly too left field for a host of top-flight teams who won’t be willing to gamble with their future on a maverick coach. Yet his quality is without debate. El Loco has been overlooked so far, but could that soon be set to change?
Quique Sanchez Flores
By all accounts, Quique Sanchez Flores was unlucky to be dismissed by Watford in 2016. The Spaniard led the Hornets to a 13th place finish in the Premier League. That remains their best top-flight season since 1986-87 when they finished 9th under Graham Taylor.
What’s more, Sanchez Flores got his side playing some nice football in his time at Vicarage Road. He got the best out of players like Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo, too. Since then, the 53-year-old has done an admirable job in his homeland with Espanyol but now finds himself out of work once more.
The ex-Atletico Madrid boss equipped himself well last time he was in the Premier League. He’ll likely figure prominently on the rumour reel this summer.
