Manchester City to go back in for Riyad Mahrez?

Foxes ace on course for summer move…

Helped by the devastating form of both Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling, Manchester City cantered to the Premier League title.

But you would’ve been forgiven for forgetting just how hard they pushed to sign Riyad Mahrez in January.

Four separate bids were submitted for the player by City but The Coral News Team believe he could be back on the Premier League champions radar as Pep Guardiola looks to strengthen the team for next season.

Mahrez has been the centre of much attention since becoming a Premier League winner back in 2016. The Leicester City winger even handed in a transfer request this time last year, however it’s been Pep Guardiola’s pursuit that had piqued the Algerian’s interest.

Options

Arsenal have maintained a very public interest in the 27-year-old for two seasons now. But his desire to play Champions League football with Leicester during the 2016/17 season saw their best chance of snaring the player fade.

Italian giants AS Roma looked a likely destination for much of the January window but Leicester would not budge on their £50 million valuation. And despite agreeing personal terms, the deal went dead.

Reduced figure

The Leicester board demanded a reported eye-watering £90 million for former PFA Player of the Year. But are now more likely to accept a figure close to the £65 million City bid in the dying embers of the January window.

The Foxes have been in limbo for the last few months, free from the threat of relegation. However, with no chance of another European adventure they have watched Burnley mount a challenge on the top six.

Mahrez has been at his most productive since Leicester’s Premier League title triumph scoring 11 goals and laying on nine more. Despite recently announcing he has withdrawn his year-long transfer request he could still make a move in the post-season.

Jigsaw completed

If the transfer did go through this summer, then City fans could look forward to an exhilarating attacking arsenal.

As well as fighting off a renewed challenge from Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea next season, Guardiola’s priority will surely be on making a real claim for the Champions League – a trophy he hasn’t won since 2011.

A forward line that combines the electric pace of Sane, the new found goal-getter in Sterling, and the silky Mahrez in support of Gabriel Jesus could prove the missing piece in the jigsaw.
