Five football tips on the agenda
With the World Cup a few short weeks away, the international action is hotting up. While Monday’s games are ‘friendlies’ in name, there’s no way the likes of WC-bound Iran will be taking things lightly.
There’s also a smattering of club football on Monday. Coventry City face Exeter in the League Two Play-off Final, whilst in Norway, there’s a clash with big implications at both ends of the table.

The Sky Blues face Exeter City at Wembley, with a place in League One at stake. And the signs suggest Mark Robins’ men will have the upper hand in the capital. For starters, Coventry have been terrific on their travels lately.
They’ve won three on the trot away from the Ricoh Arena, scoring 12 goals in the process. They also have the better Wembley record. Last season saw Cov won the EFL Trophy here, while the Grecians lost in the League Two Final.
In the Eliteserien, Sarpsborg are flying high following an 11-point haul from their last five games. And they could continue their push for a European spot against lowly Stabaek on Monday.
Sarpsborg won their last home game 4-0 against IK Start. And the hosts should have few problems against a Stabaek side who’ve taken just two points from their last seven away games – losing each of the last three.
Despite their geographical proximity, Monday’s game is the first time Bosnia-Herzegovina have faced Montenegro. With Bosnia enjoying a strong home record in recent times, chances are they’ll enjoy a morale-boosting friendly win.
Bosnia have won six and drawn three of their last 10 on home soil. That run has included a 2-0 defeat of Wales and the 5-0 hammering of Estonia in World Cup Qualifying. As for Montenegro, they’re winless in four – conceding seven and scoring just two.
Ireland visit France in a friendly match, with the Irish eyeing up a morale boost after narrowly missing out on a World Cup spot. The last meeting between these sides came at Euro 2016, with Les Bleus somewhat fortunate to grab a 2-1 victory.
Even if they edge it again here, Ireland rarely go down without a fight. They’ve lost just four of their last 28 games by more than a single goal, and face a French side who lost 3-2 to Colombia in their last home match.
This summer’s World Cup marks the first time Iran have reached back-to-back tournaments. And Carlos Quieroz’s side are gearing up for the competition with a friendly against Turkey.
Iran have lost just one of their last 14 games. Along the way, they’ve chalked up wins over Algeria and World Cup newbies Panama. As for Turkey, they’ve won just one of the last six games – throwing away a 2-0 lead to draw with Montenegro last time out.
