Coral’s Premier League Team of the Year

Man City, Liverpool, Burnley and Spurs stars feature…

The 2017-18 Premier League drew to a close on Sunday with everything wrapped up and a bow placed on top.

Manchester City hit the fabled 100-point mark, while Swansea City were confirmed as the third side to be relegated.

And Mohamed Salah found the net to go out on his own as the all-time Premier League goalscorer over a 38-game season.

But who has made the Coral News Team’s Team of the Year? Without further ado…

Goalkeeper: Ederson

It was a tough choice between the City number one and David De Gea. But the Brazilian gets the nod. A lot of pressure was on him to live up to his price tag and sort out a problem position for Pep Guardiola.

However, the former Benfica stopper has starred. His command of his box, his shot-stopping, and his distribution are all top-class.

Right-back: Kieran Trippier

Kyle Walker has been superb for City this season. And it would have been easy to hand it to the former Tottenham man.

But Kieran Trippier has replaced Walker with aplomb at the White Hart Lane club. He has defended and attacked with vigour and verve and should go to the England World Cup as Walker’s understudy.

Centre-back: Nicolas Otamendi

Guardiola has made a top defender out of Otamendi this season. It took a year of learning the intricate system, but the former Valencia man has shone this term.

The Argentine has cut out the lapses of concentration and a lot of City’s play starts from Otamendi’s crisp passing out from the defence.

Centre-back: James Tarkowski

Solid, no-nonsense, and good on the ball, Tarkowski pips Jan Vertonghen to this position.

Burnley conceded just three goals more than Spurs this term and Tarkowski’s leadership was a major reason for that.

Left-back: Andrew Robertson

It’s been a funny old season for left-backs. Not too many have stuck their hand up for recognition. But Andrew Robertson certainly did with some brilliant displays in recent months.

A modern full-back with an Audi-like engine.

Defensive midfield: Fernandinho

It was between the Brazilian metronome and N’Golo Kante but the City man wins out.

It’s been a brilliant season at the heart of the City midfield for the 33-year-old. Guardiola will need to wrap him in cotton wool post-World Cup.

Midfield: Kevin De Bruyne

Just pipped to the main player awards by Mo Salah, De Bruyne has nearly reinvented what it means to be a central midfielder in the Premier League.

His sat-nav-like passing and some rasping goals have been a joy to watch.

Midfield: Christian Eriksen

Again, it was a tough call between David Silva and the Spurs creator-in-chief. But Eriksen gets the nod with some absurd displays for the North London out.

The great Dane managed 10 goals and 10 assists over the season.

Right-forward: Mo Salah

Was it ever going to be anyone else? The Egyptian King has been unstoppable for Liverpool this season.

32 league goals. 45 in total, and counting. Say no more.

Left-forward: Leroy Sane

The German youngster has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water. His trickery on the wing is a real throwback the old days of Ryan Giggs et al.

The 22-year-old managed 10 goals and 15 assists in 27 league starts.

Striker: Harry Kane

It was another 30-goal season for one of the most deadly strikers in world football. He was just about pipped by Salah to the Golden Boot.

But Kane will be hopeful of further goals for England in Russia over the summer.
