De Bruyne and Salah lead the way

As the Premier League heads into the final straight, most of the big issues have been settled.

It’s a matter of when, not if, Manchester City win the league. A combination of Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are set to make up the rest of the top four, with Chelsea now back at 20/1 in fifth.

But there’s a fierce battle raging for Player of the Season. Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah both have big claims as a result of their sensational form this term.

The Coral News Team have examined the duo’s cases, as well as two other outside shots…

Kevin De Bruyne

De Bruyne has been the best player for the league’s best team. The Belgian has been deployed in a slightly deeper role this term, which has given him the platform to run games for City.

He’s registered 15 assists in league action this term, the most in the division. The 26-year-old has chipped in with seven goals too.

Those numbers don’t do full justice to how impressive he’s been though. City have averaged 71.5% possession this term – the highest of any top-flight side since records began. De Bruyne’s ability to beat a man, pick a pass and make the right decision has been integral to their sparkling attacking play.

Mohamed Salah

Many people expected Salah to be an exciting addition to Liverpool’s attack. Few would have foreseen what a success he’s proven to be at Anfield already.

The £36.9m summer signing is the division’s top scorer with 29 goals. No one has ever scored more than 31 goals in a 38-game Premier League season. Salah has five games to change that.

As well as being an exceptional goalscorer, the winger has created nine goals for his teammates. He gets fans out of their seats whenever he’s on the ball too. Defenders know that he wants to cut inside from the right onto his left foot, but they’re usually powerless to stop him.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane is chasing a third successive Golden Boot, but he’s got some way to go before catching Salah at the top of the scoring charts.

He’s currently on 24 league goals in 31 games. And if anyone can make up the gap, it’s the Tottenham Hotspur striker.

Kane could still fire Spurs into second place too. Mauricio Pochettino’s side are currently fourth, four points behind Manchester United.

David de Gea

Speaking of United, De Gea has yet again been their standout performer. He’s kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper this season (16). To make it even more impressive, he’s not playing behind a vintage United defence.

The Spain number one has been very busy between the posts. He’s made 103 saves in league action, the fourth-highest tally in the division. It’s rare to see a goalkeeper at a top club ranked so highly – Arsenal’s Petr Cech is the closest of the other Big Six goalkeepers at number 12.

De Gea made 14 of those saves in an unforgettable display against the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium. He almost single-handedly maintained United’s lead with one incredible save after another. That game was the high point of another season of consistent excellence from him.
