Former England skipper gives his take on Pep’s side

I was really surprised that Pep Guardiola left Raheem Sterling out at Anfield in the first-leg.

He’s been one of the players of the season so far and to not select him was a big decision.

On Tuesday he went for it, with an incredibly attacking line-up and Liverpool would have been pleased when they saw the team-sheet.

Liverpool are the best in the country, perhaps even the world, at counter-attacking football and you always believed they would get one or two moments where they could pick City off.

Despite the defeat City are on the brink of wrapping the league up and with another trophy safely in the cabinet it has still been a successful season.

They’ve had some outstanding performers in the likes of De Bruyne, Sterling, Sane and Silva and the side has taken giant steps towards Pep’s ultimate plan of how he wants them to play.

But ultimately the aim will be to win the Champions League and that was a big factor in Pep being brought in and that will certainly be their target again next year.
