Premier League talking points: Woes continue for Arsenal and Chelsea
Joy from Brighton, Burnley and Swansea
The Beast from the East did its best, but the Premier League went away without a hitch this weekend.
There were plenty of twists and turns in the ultra-competitive bottom half, while Arsenal and Chelsea lurched into crisis yet again.
Manchester City took another step towards the title, while Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur consolidated their places in the Champions League spots.
The Coral News Team run through the main talking points from a hectic weekend…
Big six is now a fierce four
Chelsea and Arsenal are rapidly falling away from the top four after a dismal weekend.
The Gunners suffered a fourth-straight loss in all competitions, going down 2-1 away at Brighton & Hove Albion.
A lack of desire and determination again reared its ugly head again for Arsene Wenger’s men.
If there’s a crisis at the Gunners, then Antonio Conte’s Chelsea aren’t far off one either. They parked the bus and didn’t even register a shot in the first-half against Manchester City.
The second half saw the Blues literally walking towards the Citizens, despite being a goal down. Like Arsenal, Chelsea showed no commitment and no desire. Both sets of fans are furious as their hopes of a Champions League spot evaporate.
Seagulls are flying high
Arsenal were terrible on Sunday largely because Brighton took the game to them. Chris Hughton’s side deservedly took a 2-0 lead, and had plenty of chances to score more.
It was an excellent result for the Seagulls, who have now collected 11 points from their last five games. They sit 10th and have opened a somewhat comfortable nine-point gap to the relegation zone.
They just need another win or two and then they can start planning for another campaign in the Premier League.
The Son is rising at Tottenham
Harry Kane may be the main man at Tottenham Hotspur, but Son Heung-Min is arguably Spurs’ most exciting player.
The South Korean was sensational in Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield, bagging both goals.
Son’s movement and energy was too much for the Yorkshire outfit.
He was in and out of Mauricio Pochettino’s team at the start of the season, but right now Son is utterly un-droppable and equally unstoppable.
Burnley bounce back into life
Sean Dyche’s Burnley desperately needed to arrest a 12-game winless run. The Clarets were starting to slip into that fierce mid-table fight, having held seventh for so long.
So they’ll be mightily relieved to have beaten Everton on Saturday afternoon.
The spirit they showed to come from behind should erase all doubts that the Turf Moor outfit are in trouble. A top-half finish beckons.
Double trouble as Swans hammer Irons
Andre and Jordan Ayew ran the show as Swansea City walloped West Ham United 4-1 on Saturday.
The brothers were a constant thorn in the Hammers’ side, with boss David Moyes left to despair a performance he deemed ‘embarrassing’.
It’s now one win in six for the Londoners, while the Swans are out of the relegation zone and could climb away from danger if the Ayew brothers keep producing the goods.
