Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham impressed

There have been two great nights of Champions League football this week.

I much prefer this stage of the competition, rather than the early group games where you get served up a lot of boring fixtures.

All the teams that I have watched, whether that is Man City, Spurs or Juventus, have gone for it.

Liverpool were outstanding, Porto just could not cope with them.

Spurs showed great spirit to come back from 2-0 down to get a draw, while City were magnificent against Basel.

Premier League progression

City and Liverpool are all but through now to the quarter-finals.

My guess is that we could get at least another two English teams joining them. Tottenham have two away goals to take back to Wembley.

It won’t be easy in the second leg because Juve are very experienced but they have given themselves an excellent chance.

It’s been a while since we have had such great representation of English clubs in the latter stages of this tournament and they deserve a lot of credit for the way they have stood up to the other top sides in Europe so far.

Magic in Madrid

The game last night between Real Madrid and PSG was also a fantastic game.

Both teams went for it from the opening whistle which made for great viewing.

Real Madrid may not be having a great season domestically but you cannot write them off, as they have so many big-game players who have been there before.

Great goalscorers in the Premier League

Apparently Ronaldo is having a quiet season yet he already has 25 goals.

Speaking of goals when you look at the top three goalscorers in Europe this season, they are all playing in the Premier League – Kane, Salah and Aguero.

They are all ahead of Messi, Neymar, Ronaldo and Cavani which is great for the Premier League.

PSG are still maybe lacking a few players with the experience of these big knock-out ties that you need to go and win this competition.

Over two legs, you need to know when to stick with what you have. Sometimes a 1-1 draw or even a 2-1 defeat away from home is not a bad result in the opening leg.

Let’s hope next week’s games are equally as good. Chelsea go into their game very much like Real Madrid, they have not been as good as you’d expect them to be in their domestic league.

They have a great opportunity to get their season back on track though if they can pull off a victory over Barcelona.

Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer played his entire career at the top level of English football, winning the Premier League title with Blackburn in 1994-95. The following summer he signed for his hometown club, Newcastle United, for a then world record £15 million fee.

He ended his playing career with a record 260 Premier League goals, which still stands today. He also won 63 caps for England, including 34 as captain, and among his 30 international goals were five scored at Euro 96, a total that won him the Golden Boot at that tournament.

Now the chief pundit on Match Of The Day, Alan was one of the first two players inducted into the Premier League Hall Of Fame this year.
