A look back at the weekend’s top-flight action

Manchester City are still 13 points clear at the top of the table following their 1-1 draw with Burnley, but there’s still plenty to play for elsewhere.

There were twists and turns in the race for the top four and the battle to avoid relegation this weekend.

And here are the Coral News Team with the big talking points…

Carvalhal’s working wonders at Swansea

Swansea City looked doomed a few weeks ago. But they’ve now beaten Arsenal and Liverpool, and held Leicester City to a draw in their last three league outings.

The Swans are unbeaten in seven games in all competitions and now sit in 17th, above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Carvalhal has transformed the mood at the South Wales club. Now they’ve got a decent run of fixtures before they take on Manchester United at the end of March. They could have climbed to safety by then if they maintain their recent progress.

Kane keeps his cool

Harry Kane saw very little of the ball in open play during Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool. But he still managed to have a decisive impact on the game. After winning a debatable penalty, he hit an uncharacteristically poor effort from the spot that was easily saved by Loris Karius.

Spurs won another penalty minutes later and the star striker stepped up again. It was virtually the final kick of the game, front of the Kop and it could have swung the race for the top four.

After missing the first spot kick, many players would have left the second one to a teammate. Not Kane. He made no mistake this time and scored his 100th Premier League goal.

Five stars for new-look Arsenal attack

Life after Alexis Sanchez may be very exciting for Arsenal fans if Saturday’s 5-1 win over Everton is any indication.

New signings Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan both started and made an instant impact. Aubameyang opened his account with finesse, while Mkhitaryan set up three of the five goals.

The most encouraging aspect was how they helped the Gunners to play the fast, fluid football that was the trademark of Arsene Wenger’s best sides.

Newcastle could regret lack of arrivals

Newcastle United could be in for a long few months. The Magpies are 16th, one point above the bottom three.

The club didn’t back Rafa Benitez with the investment he desperately wanted and every game now is likely to be a scrap for the points they need.

Newcastle were fortunate to leave Selhurst Park with a point after their 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace. They clung on for the second half, without having the quality or composure to get hold of the ball and relieve the pressure. Benitez has his work cut out on Tyneside.

Howe attracting admirers at Bournemouth

Bournemouth were in the relegation zone at Christmas, now they’re all the way up in ninth following their comeback win over Stoke City.

Eddie Howe continues to do a very impressive job at the Vitality Stadium. He didn’t panic when results were going against his side. He kept faith with his attacking principles and he’s now being vindicated.

The Cherries are on a seven-game unbeaten run in the league, which includes wins over Arsenal and Chelsea.
