Morata hasn’t lived up to expectations

Chelsea had very high hopes for Alvaro Morata when they signed him for a club record fee of £60m last summer.

The striker scored 20 goals in his final season at Real Madrid, helping them to win the Champions League and La Liga.

But after a good start, he’s really struggled for the Blues in recent months. The 25-year-old hasn’t scored in any of his last 10 appearances. A real low point came in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal in December, when he could easily have scored a hat-trick but fluffed his lines.

There’s little patience in football and reports suggest Chelsea are already looking for a replacement up front, with plenty of speculation linking them with Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.

The Poland captain is said to be eager to leave the Allianz Arena and the Coral News Team have looked at three reasons why he could light up Chelsea’s attack…

Goals galore

There aren’t many better goalscorers around than Lewandowski. He’s got at least 20 league goals in six of the last seven seasons, including this term. Morata has never hit that number in a single campaign.

The former Dortmund man is deadly with either foot or in the air, which makes him a huge threat to opposition defences.

Chelsea have only scored 50 goals in the league this season, the least of any side in the top six. Bringing in Lewandowski would fix that issue.

Great pedigree

No one doubts Morata’s talent, but can he deal with the pressure of being the main man at a top club?

He’d never been the first-choice striker at any side before moving to Stamford Bridge. He was a young prospect in his first spell at Real Madrid and an understudy to Karim Benzema when he returned. He shared attacking duties with Carlos Tevez, then Paulo Dybala, at Juventus in between.

The Madrid-born forward has already played more minutes of league football this season than in any of his previous campaigns. It’s no surprise he’s struggling with the workload in a more physical league.

There wouldn’t be any of those concerns with Lewandowski. He’s thrived while leading the line at Bayern, where success is demanded, not hoped for. The 29-year-old could be relied upon to make an instant impact and sustain it.

Star quality

Eden Hazard continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid. Chelsea are doing all they can to keep him, but if he does leave there’d be a shortage of genuinely world-class attacking players at Stamford Bridge.

Lewandowski is proven as an elite performer and he’s got the status and presence to lift the entire side.
