Joe Tizzard: “Cue Card will run a big race at Ascot”

SPORTSBOOK ODDS

Tizzard stables also have runners at Wincanton and Haydock

I couldn’t have been more thrilled with how things worked out with Native River. We couldn’t have written it better. It ticked all the boxes.

He won well, he didn’t have too hard a race. I was excited about him for the Gold Cup before the race, but now I’m even more excited. He’s come out of the race really well. The dream is very much alive.

I fancied Golden Sunrise last Sunday but Mount Rushmore’s run was a nice surprise, coming second for a yard one-two.

Vison Des Flos handled the conditions really well and we said that if we were going to win a race with him this season we wanted it to be a decent one. He won in the style of the horse we bought him to be.

He’s a work in progress and he’s starting to deliver. He had a small wind op but that didn’t make him win the way he did.

He’s a talented horse and it’s all starting to click. He’ll go for the Ballymore.

Elegant Escape won as he was supposed to. We wanted to run him as it would have been too long a break between Boxing Day and Cheltenham.

It was a lovely confidence booster and he seems to be getting better with every run.

I think Battle of Ideas ran and travelled lovely, and he looked like he was going to figure in the finish but then he faded two out.

I think he might just want better ground. We’ll look for another novice hurdle in a few weeks’ time.

3.15 Haydock – The Dutchman

The Dutchman went up 13lbs for his win last time. He travelled and jumped so well in the ground that day and got into a great rhythm.

I think that 13lb rise was stiff enough but probably deserved. He’s in lovely form at home and we know he handles Haydock and that kind of ground.

If he runs well up against Blaklion then that would suggest he has a nice chance in the Grand National.

I see no reason why he won’t run a huge race in this and put him right in the mix for Aintree.

3.35 Ascot – Cue Card

Paddy Brennan came down to sit on Cue Card on Thursday morning and he was in really good form.

When he lost the ride on Cue Card he took it like a man and kept his thoughts to himself, and now he’s back on board the horse in a Grade One race, and he knows full well that if Cue Card runs to his best form then he has a massive chance.

Sometimes being a jockey, as I know from experience it’s best just to bite your lip but there are often rewards for doing so.

Cue Card is in good form and I think he’ll run a big race.

4.45 Ascot – My Lady Grey

My Lady Grey runs in the bumper. We had a bumper winner yesterday. She works nicely and is quite forward. She was entered in October but pulled a muscle but now she’s ready to run and we are excited about running her.

Her Mum won a bumper and she’s well bred. We don’t win many bumpers but you never know. She won’t embarrass herself.

1.40 Wincanton – Ruby Russet

Ruby Russet has been given a handicap mark. She probably wants better ground. She’s quite a fat mare and I think she might need the run. She’ll be winning on better ground at some stage.

3.55 Wincanton – Watcombe Heights

Watcombe Heights is a horse I bought at Doncaster a couple of months ago. He has some decent form with a few of our horses.

He was third to White Moon. He’s rated 124 and he works nicely at home. We’ll find out a bit about him in this race but I think he’s capable of winning.

4.30 Wincanton – Silverhow

Silverhow is gradually getting the hang of it. He jumped much better at Hereford. He’ll have a big chance in this.

5.05 Wincanton – Sparky’s Spirit

Sparkys Spirit hasn’t been given a handicap mark yet so he’s out again for some more experience.

Joe Tizzard

Former Jump jockey Joe Tizzard enjoyed a stellar career in the saddle, with his record 91 wins to claim the 1998-99 champion conditional title gaining him prominence. Tizzard’s first Cheltenham Festival successes came during that period, including an Arkle win onboard the Paul Nicholls trained Flagship Uberalles. However, it was his Grade 1 victories in partnership with Cue Card, trained by dad Colin, which really catapulted Joe into the big time. Now assistant trainer to his father the Tizzards’ Dorset yard is home to some of the most exciting horses in training, including Cue Card, Thistlecrack and Native River.
