What Pochettino needs to take Tottenham to the next level

SPORTSBOOK ODDS

No Premier League side can top Tottenham Hotspur for form right now. Mauricio Pochettino’s men have managed 13 points from their last five games, and now sit just three points outside the top four.

However, despite yet another season of good displays, the Lilywhites are still without a major honour since 2008 – and haven’t lifted the league title since 1961.

As it stands, they’re still competing on three fronts – and have been gifted a tie against Newport County in the FA Cup.

So, with the January transfer window still open for a fortnight, where should they look to strengthen – and who should their targets be? The Coral News Team investigate.

Left-Back:

While Tottenham have a top-class left-back in Danny Rose, the player’s frosty relationship with the club means Spurs aren’t seeing the best of the 27-year-old. And it seems a move – either this month or in the summer – could be on the cards.

Spurs’ other options on that flank are decent, but none of them good enough to play week-in, week-out for a side with such lofty ambitions.

One player who could be worth shelling out big money for is Bayern Munich’s David Alaba. Pacy, creative and with a superb reading of the game, the Austrian also boasts plenty of trophy-winning experience with Der FCB.

Another Bundesliga-based possibility is Raphael Guerreiro. The Portugal ace is unlikely to join Spurs this month, with our trading team make it a 40/1 shot. However, he’s a player they should look at in the summer.

Central Midfield

While Moussa Sissoko has improved somewhat in comparison to last season’s dismal displays, there’s little doubt Spurs could improve significantly in midfield. Specifically in the less glamorous elements of the game.

That’s especially true with the solid-but-unspectacular Mousa Dembele now the wrong side of 30-years-old.

AS Roma’s Radja Nainggolan has previously been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea. But with the Belgian possessing physical strength, good distribution and an eye for goal, he could be just the ticket.

Right-Wing:

Erik Lamela may have made a tentative return from long-term injury, but the Argentine’s lengthy absence highlighted the fact Spurs need options on the right flank.

The Lilywhites have been strongly linked with Wilfried Zaha. With plenty of Prem pedigree under his belt, the 25-year-old is currently enjoying the form of his life at Crystal Palace. They’re currently 16/1 third-favourites for his signature this month.

In the long term, Athletic Bilbao’s dynamic assist-king Inaki Williams is a promising option.

Having recently signed a new contract with the Basque club, he’s 40/1 for a January switch to Wembley – but should be considered by Spurs in the long-term.
