Top jockey discusses his weekend rides

12.30 Chepstow – Cadeyrn

I ride Cadeyrn for my brother Michael. He won a bumper with him on Coral Welsh Grand National Day twelve months ago.

He’s a lovely horse. He disappointed first time out around Carlisle but I’d be very disappointed if he doesn’t leave that race miles behind in this.

There are plenty of runners and I’m sure it’s a competitive race, but we haven’t seen the best of Cadeyrn yet and he’s a nice horse that I like a lot. He should run a big race

2.05 Chepstow – Rathlin Rose

Rathlin Rose didn’t seem to take to the Grand National fences last time. On bits and bobs of form last season he’d have an each way chance in this.

It’s a mighty competitive race, it’s a full field and exciting to be a part of, but on pieces of form he would have an each way chance.

With the conditions as they are you want a horse that will truly act on heavy ground. It’s going to be a year like those when Mountainous won it covered in mud. You need a tough horse but also one with plenty of class too.

The winner is likely to already have some decent form to his name, a bit like Mountainous did, as even though he won the Welsh National at a big price, he did have some decent novice chase form to his name.

In the case of my horse, there are those two wins at Sandown last year that show what he’s capable of. If he bounces back to that kind of form, he’d have some kind of chance.

The Coral Welsh Grand National is a race I’ve always been very fond of. My Dad won it four times, Grandad won it, and my brother Michael has won it, so it’s about time I won it.

My best finish was fourth on Monbeg Dude.

My best memory of the race was Carvills Hill winning it with Dad on board. He was amazing, one of the best performances of all time.

I was there that day, whereas I was too young to attend when Run And Skip win.

I watched on the telly when Dad won the race twice on Bonanza Boy but was lucky enough to be there when Carvills Hill destroyed them off top weight.

He was giving weight to Grand National winners, Gold Cup winners, one of the great weight carrying performances of all time.

Of the others I’d be looking at the likes of Mysteree for my brother, or Chase The Spud, as you know they have that touch of class and yet at the same time they’ll handle the atrocious conditions and get the trip.

O’Faiolans Boy is thrown in at the weights but you have to go back a long way to find some form. If he was to have a resurgence then he’d have a chance at a price.

Michael is very happy with Mysteree. He’s fresh and well, and the extra week probably wouldn’t have done him any harm.

2.45 Chepstow – Battle of Ideas

He’s got a nice weight. It’s a tight little handicap but he’s been showing some good form and he’s ready to take this type of field on.

He put up a nice performance last time and there appears plenty more to come from him. He’s young and he’s improving.

Sometimes you can ride a big lazy horse at Chepstow in these conditions and they can be the first off the bridle and yet keep coming through.

It just depends on how the horses handle the ground. You can have horses that handle soft ground but then don’t handle Chepstow heavy.

You know from an early stage how they are coping with it.

3.55 Chepstow – Mount Rushmore

He’s had one run in a Point to Point and won that. He won that race on heavy which is a good sign.

He is by Shantou, a sire that has had a lot of success jumping and that seemingly handle the heavy ground, so he should have a good chance.

Sunday

12.30 Plumpton – Miss Tynte

She ran nicely enough last time out at Taunton. Hopefully we can build on that.
