Returning Southfield Royale has the ability to rule at Wincanton
John Gosden can also continue good record
The action may not be as prestigious this week but there’s still plenty of racing to enjoy – both Jumps and Flat.
There are four meetings from the UK across the afternoon, with live televised racing on ITV from Wincanton and Doncaster.
There’s a couple of Grade Ones to look forward to, as well as some Listed races and the November Handicap.
As ever on a Saturday, the Coral News Team takes a look at the cards and selects their best bets.
Bet of the Day
This preview starts at Wincanton for the Badger Ales Trophy Chase. This 3m 1f renewal has a huge field running, with as many as 30 horses going.
However, it’s Neil Mulholland’s Southfield Royale that has caught the eye. The seven-year-old stayer (has) had a rough last 12 months or so but is back this season with renewed vigour.
He’s still only a novice in many regards and has a Grade One win behind him. In addition, he was also fourth over four miles at the Cheltenham Festival.
If he can match that kind of form, a step back in trip might suit. The soft ground could be a slight worry but at an each-way price he’s the Coral Bet of the Day.
Gosden can have big say in November Handicap
It’s off to Doncaster to take a look at the November Handicap in the Flat season’s finale.
The Coral News Team has taken a bit of a shine to Royal Line in this 1m 4f renewal.
This is a difficult race to pick from with another big field of 23 expected. However, we’re giving John Gosden’s three-year-old the nod.
He lost his unbeaten record at Newbury last time out. But that was at 1m 5f. He should take to the drop back in trip.
There is a slight unknown in terms of the size of the field and how he’ll handle it. But Gosden has a decent record in this race and won’t be throwing him in blind.
Nicholls can take his pick in Rising Stars
Heading back to Wincanton, the John Romans Park Homes “Rising Stars” Novices’ Chase is Paul Nicholls’ to lose.
The Somerset-based trainer has won this race (in) five of the last nine years and has four entries going in this 2m 4f renewal.
Black Corton has won his last four and was particularly impressive at Cheltenham last time out, coming in by 10L at 5/2.
There’s a definite step-up in class, and a step back in trip, to consider here. However, he certainly looks underrated given the prices.
