Manchester United man is on the way out

Barring an bizarre number of injuries to Manchester United’s first-team, Luke Shaw is unlikely to feature for Jose Mourinho this season.

And given that the 22-year-old is out of contract next summer, his Old Trafford nightmare is limping to a drab conclusion.

The good news however, is that the Englishman is fully fit after years of injury problems.

January exit makes sense

Shaw could leave for free in six months’ time, but it is in Mourinho and Man United’s interests to cash in when January rolls around.

An early exit can only be a good thing for the player too.

United spent a mighty £33m to bring Shaw in from Southampton in 2014, a world record fee for a teenager at the time.

But in less than two months’ time, the left-back could be snapped up for as little as £8-10m.

Shaw must be craving out for a chance to restart his career away from Old Trafford. The opportunity to get six months under his belt at a new team before next season must also appeal.

Plus, a strong second half of the campaign could yet see Shaw force himself into the England reckoning ahead of the World Cup.

Potential options

The other good thing for the former Saints man is that there will be no shortage of potential suitors.

Granted, Shaw is unlikely to move to a Chelsea or a Manchester City.

But Everton need a long-term replacement for Leighton Baines, while Shaw could also play behind his former compatriot on the left-flank.

West Ham United are also in dire need of defensive improvements. The Hammers board are likely to hand new boss David Moyes funds in January.

Aaron Cresswell is the number one left-back at the London Stadium, but it’s not hard to see Shaw making that his own. A move to the Irons would also allow the man from Kingston-Upon-Thames to return to the capital.

Crystal Palace is another London option. The Eagles also need to make rapid improvements. But the Selhurst Park outfit boast several left-back options in Joel Ward, Patrick van Aanholt and Pape Souare.

A return to Southampton seems unlikely however, unless Shaw fancies ousting the impressive Ryan Bertrand.

West Bromwich Albion seem settled having signed Kieran Gibbs from Arsenal, but Shaw could provide competition for Erik Pieters at Stoke City.
