Pair face-off on Super Sunday

Watford host West Ham United this afternoon in the Premier League’s only Super Sunday clash.

David Moyes will take charge of the Hammers for the very first time following the sacking of Slaven Bilic just under a fortnight ago.

A match against Marco Silva’s Hornets will be a tough test for the Scot who returns to the dugout after relegation with Sunderland last season.

Bringing you all the stats, team news and tips, Coral are on hand with another big match breakdown…

Head-to-head

Recent head-to-head meetings point towards a Watford win. The Hornets went unbeaten across both fixtures last season and have only lost twice to the Hammers in the last 10 matches between the pair.

Andre Ayew rescued a point for the Irons on their last trip to Vicarage Road in February of last season. However, Marco Silva’s men were victorious at the London Stadium. Odion Ighalo, Troy Deeney, Etienne Capoue and Jose Holebas were all on the scoresheet as the Hertfordshire side recovered from 2-0 down to pick up an impressive 4-2 win.

In terms of the overall record between the pair, it’s West Ham that hold the advantage. The East Londoners have won 41 games against the Hornets since the teams first met in 1898.

However, Moyes’ new side haven’t won in the top-division at Vicarage Road since 2000, when Steve Lomas and Paulo Wanchope were on the scoresheet.

The likely XIs

Watford could be without a whole host of first-team names for this afternoon’s match. Roberto Pereyra, Younes Kaboul and Sebastian Prodl are all doubts, while Heurelho Gomes is rated a 50/50 chance. Troy Deeney will serve the second match of a three-game suspension, which will allow Andre Gray and Andre Carrillo to continue in a front-three.

The visitors could be missing Javier Hernandez and Jose Fonte, both of whom have knocks. That could mean a starting berth for Andy Carroll who will no doubt be favoured under Moyes’ more back-to-basics approach.

Marko Arnautovic will also be hopeful of a recall from the bench as the Hammers try to strike a balance between being more direct going forward and retaining solidity at the back.

Key battles

Moyes is expected be more pragmatic compared to Bilic which should see West Ham as a harder team to break down. The Hammers will be more disciplined, especially at full-back where Aaron Cresswell and Pablo Zabaleta will be expected to prioritise defending over attacking in the face of Watford’s pacey attack.

Indeed, Kiko Femenia and Holebas will provide danger on either wing, while Abdoulaye Doucoure has starred in the middle of the park. If he’s not tracked by Mark Noble or Pedro Obiang, then the 24-year-old could well add to his tally of four goals already this season.

Match odds

Silva’s side are rated as favourites at 11/10 to reverse a run of three successive defeats. The visitors have not won away from home since the final game of last season and are considered a 5/2 chance. You can back the draw at 12/5.

With both clubs proving charitable at the back so far this season, the Coral News Team are expecting goals. It’s 8/11 for Both Teams to Score in the contest. You can double up on that market and back the Hornets to win and Both Teams to Score at a potentially lucrative 16/5.

Where goalscorers are concerned, Richarlison looks like the one to be on. The Brazilian star has netted four times in the Premier League so far this season and is 15/8 to net anytime in this one. It’s 5/1 that he opens the scoring at Vicarage Road.

For the Hammers, Carroll could hold the key at 2/1 anytime. Ayew is also been in good form of late and is 13/5 to make it two in two against the Hornets.
