5 talking points from the weekend’s Premier League action

Arsenal, Pogba, Burnley and more…

Another weekend of Premier League action brought yet another Manchester City win. The Blues remain eight points clear at the top of the Premier League.

But it wasn’t all bad news for the rest of the top six. All of them except Tottenham Hotspur also won this weekend.

There was plenty of drama at the other end of the table too. Here are five of the big talking points from the top flight…

Arsenal’s front trio takes them to a new level

Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette all shone in Arsenal’s dominant win over Tottenham in the North London derby. All three of them either scored or created a goal in the 2-0 victory.

It was only the third time they’d started together. It’s not a coincidence that the Gunners have won all three of those games.

Spurs couldn’t live with their movement, energy or skill. Sanchez and Ozil could both be gone by next summer. Arsene Wenger should make the most of his talented trio while he can.

Pogba can make the difference for Man United

Paul Pogba offered a stark reminder of just what Manchester United missed during his injury-enforced absence on Saturday. His imagination and trickery lit up Old Trafford in the 4-1 win over Newcastle United.

Pogba’s stardust transforms United’s play. Without him, they’ve plodded through the last two months with a solid defence. With him, Jose Mourinho’s side look full of life going forward.

If United are going to catch Manchester City at the top of the table, the France international will have a big role to play.

Sean Dyche’s Burnley continue to impress

Sean Dyche continues to do a remarkable job at Turf Moor. After 12 games, Burnley are level on points with Liverpool and Arsenal. They’re only one point off the Champions League places too.

The Clarets had a superb home record last season but struggled in away games. They’re now tough to beat wherever they play. They’ve only lost to Manchester City on the road in the current campaign.

Dyche is currently out at 6/1 for the Everton job. But he’ll continue to be linked with bigger clubs because of what he’s doing at Burnley. c

David Moyes has it all to do

Unlike Dyche, David Moyes’ stock seems to be heading further south. His appointment at West Ham United wasn’t exactly well received by the Hammers fans.

An early win would have done the former Manchester United boss the world of good. But his new team can’t have any complaints about their 2-0 loss at Watford.

West Ham face Leicester City and Everton in their next two games. A daunting run of games against Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal follows. They need to get points on the board quickly.

Could Southampton be dragged into a relegation battle?

Southampton’s business model has been much-admired in recent years. Several managers and key players have gone but good scouting and preparation ensured the club continued to progress. Could this be the year it goes wrong?

Mauricio Pellegrino’s side have arguably had the easiest schedule of any club so far. But they’re 14th and have only won one of their last six league games. Their three wins have all come against teams in the bottom four too.

After losing 3-0 to Liverpool on Saturday, they face Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Man United before the turn of the year. Saints are currently four points above the drop zone and 10/1 to go down. It wouldn’t be a surprise if those odds shorten in the near future.
