3 reasons why Marouane Fellaini is the man Arsenal need
Belgian could leave Man United
Marouane Fellaini is a man in demand. The Belgian has rejected a new contract from Manchester United, and is reportedly wanted by Arsenal.
It’s a remarkable comeback from a man whose Old Trafford career looked all but over when Jose Mourinho took charge 18 months ago.
Fellaini’s contract expires in the summer, and it’s widely believed the Red Devils would rather lose him for free than cash in in January.
The Coral News Team have come up with three reasons why the midfielder could be exactly what Arsenal need…
Physicality
While Fellaini has reigned in the wayward elbows that often drew attention from referees, he remains a mighty presence on the pitch.
Nearing on for 6ft4in, the Belgian would bring a welcome dose of physicality to an Arsenal side so often left lacking in that department.
They have a target man in Olivier Giroud, but the Frenchman is often marked out of the game, leaving the Gunners outmuscled. Sign Fellaini and they’ll have their first midfield colossus since Patrick Vieira.
Alternatives
Arsene Wenger isn’t short of ball-playing midfielders at the Emirates. But he is short of pass-and-move attacking midfielders. Fellaini’s short-ball passing is excellent, and he isn’t one to simply keep possession.
He has been brought on regularly by Mourinho at Old Trafford to find a breakthrough when the likes of Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have failed.
And the Belgian has improved United’s efforts every time he’s been on the pitch.
He’s chipped in with four goals too, so he’s certainly productive.
Improves team-mates
When Arsenal currently attack, opponents know how to defend against them.
But Fellaini brings a curveball to proceedings. You can play it long or short to him, high or low and he’ll control it, hold it up, and bring others into the game.
He would buy the Gunners time, and allow the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Alexis Sanchez to get into better positions.
Plus, there isn’t a defender in the game who knows how to properly contain the former Everton man, with gaps at the back appearing all over the place when he is in play.
