The Premier League is back with a bang this weekend as Liverpool and Manchester United clash at Anfield in the early kick-off.
It’s arguably the biggest rivalry in English football between the two biggest names in the game.
Jurgen Klopp’s team are already a massive seven points behind Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils. A win is imperative if they’re to stay in touch with the top four.
The Reds have had some huge heroes in this fixture over the years.
If the current generation of Anfield stars needs any inspiration, the Coral News Team have picked out five of the biggest.
Dirk Kuyt
Sunday, 3 March 2011. Dirk Kuyt became the first Liverpool player to score a league hat-trick against Manchester United in 21 years.
The tireless Dutchman matched Peter Beardsley’s 1990 feat with a helping hand from the enigmatic Luis Suarez.
The result – a 3-1 success to the Reds – blew the title race wide open as Merseyside basked in derby glory.
Steven Gerrard
The iconic Liverpool captain loved a goal against Manchester United. The midfield metronome always upped his game for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
He managed eight Premier League goals against United in 30 games. None were more famous than the long-range missile in 2001.
Gerrard collected the ball, rode through the midfield, then unleashed a 25-yard thunderbolt which left goalkeeper Fabien Barthez rooted to the spot.
Danny Murphy
Murphy was always a quite handy a player for Liverpool.
However, what his career will mostly be remembered for was being the player – outside of United – with the most winners at Old Trafford.
No one quite enjoyed a curled free-quick into a top corner of a Man United net more than Murphy did.
Robbie Fowler
The Scouser they called God – Fowler – used to love torturing the United backline of the noughties and early 2000s.
The Toxteth-born Merseysider managed six strikes in total against the old enemy, most famously at Old Trafford in 1995.
The England forward shouldered Gary Neville out of the way before sublimely chipping past Peter Schmeichel.
John Arne Riise
Fullbacks can be infamous for having a howitzer of a shot on them – none more so than John Arne Riise.
Martin Tyler’s “Goodness, gracious me” commentary will forever live in Anfield hearts as the Norwegian’s pile driving free-kick flew past Fabian Barthez.
The flame-haired left-back scored 21 goals in total for the reds but none more iconic than that.
