Ozil could reunite with Jose Mourinho

The arrival of Mesut Ozil was supposed to signal the dawn of a new era at Arsenal, but it’s not quite worked out that way. Despite winning two FA Cups, the Gunners haven’t challenged for the title during his four years at the club.

The Londoners failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time under Arsene Wenger last season, which is one of the reasons Ozil and Alexis Sanchez have yet to commit to signing a new deal.

The two stars could be available on a free transfer next summer. And Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly eager to bring the playmaker to Old Trafford.

The Coral News Team think Ozil could be a very smart addition for United and here’s why…

Team structure

Ozil has exceptional vision and the ability to thread inch-perfect passes. He’s created 3.64 chances per 90 minutes in the Premier League so far this season, second only to Philippe Coutinho.

However, the 28-year-old doesn’t contribute much defensively, which means he needs a solid midfield behind him to ensure the team remains balanced when he roams the final third.

He doesn’t have that at Arsenal. Aaron Ramsey likes to burst into the box, which often leaves Granit Xhaka to hold the midfield on his own. Xhaka lacks pace and mobility, so he’s forced to make last-ditch tackles to try to stop opposition attacks.

At Madrid, Mourinho used a combination of Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira and Lassana Diarra in midfield to ensure that the team retained their shape even when Ozil drifted from his central role.

Mourinho has the tactical nous and midfield options to get the best out of Ozil consistently.

Mourinho’s man

Jose Mourinho has tended to favour combative, hard-working players throughout his managerial career.

Ozil doesn’t fit that mould but the Portuguese coach adored him while they were both at the Bernabeu.

The Germany international was the glue that knitted the team’s play together. His ability to quickly release the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema was central to Madrid’s title win in 2011-12.

The Spanish giants scored a record 121 goals that season and Ozil registered a league-high 16 assists.

When Ozil joined Arsenal, Mourinho said: “Ozil is unique. There is no copy of him, not even a bad copy.

“He is the best No.10 in the world. He makes things very easy for me and for his team-mates with his football vision and the decisions he makes.”

It’s no surprise the United boss is eager to resume their working relationship.

Awesome attack

Ozil is arguably an upgrade over Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata in the number ten role. His arrival would give United another option to break down defences that are happy to sit deep against them.

The Arsenal star is able to find space and pick a pass even in tight areas. Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Zlatan Ibrahimovic would all enjoy the service he provides.

Paul Pogba could also benefit from his arrival. Opponents would need to watch Ozil carefully, which giving the central midfielder more room to operate in.
