3 reasons Cesc Fabregas would be a great Man United signing
Fabregas could be reunited with Jose Mourinho
Manchester United got a crucial win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend to keep up the pressure on league-leaders Manchester City.
However, after blowing teams away in the opening weeks of the campaign, they’ve struggled to be as effective going forward since Paul Pogba’s injury.
Now Chelsea are understood to be rushing to offer Cesc Fabregas a new deal to fend off a potential move to United.
Would Fabregas fit in at Old Trafford? The Coral News Team investigate…
Mourinho’s man
Jose Mourinho already knows Fabregas well, having worked with the Spain international at Chelsea. Mourinho usually demands discipline from his midfielders, but he accommodated Fabregas’ defensive weaknesses due to his passing ability.
Fabregas was integral to Chelsea’s title win in his first season at the club. The 30-year-old registered 18 assists that year, the most in the division.
Mourinho fielded him alongside Nemanja Matic, who did most of the grunt work in midfield. He could play them together again at United, giving Paul Pogba more licence to roam.
Added creativity
As mentioned earlier, United have played fairly conservatively in recent weeks. The loss of Pogba has made a huge difference.
In the four league matches Pogba played, United scored the most goals in the division (12), averaging 3.00 per game. Without him, they’re scoring just 1.8 per game. They’re also creating fewer chances. A league-high 5.90 chances per game with Pogba has fallen to 4.5 without him, level with Stoke City as the 12th highest tally.
They have faced tougher opponents in recent weeks but the drop is also a result of the lack of creativity in central areas. Fabregas would immediately improve things in that regard. He’s created 25 chances in the top flight this season. Only Mesut Ozil, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva have more.
Winning mentality
There’s plenty of talent in the United ranks, but few players remain from the glory days under Sir Alex Ferguson. Many of the youngsters don’t know what it takes to win a league title at the end of a long campaign.
Fabregas is vastly experienced and has won almost all there is to win in his career for club and country. He was part of the incredible Spain side that won a World Cup and two European Championships from 2008 to 2012. And he’s picked up silverware at Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea.
His presence in the dressing room would add to the winning mentality that Mourinho wants to foster amongst all of his teams.
